Newcastle Regional Heliport
Construction Underway

Construction has begun on the Newcastle Regional Heliport at Steel River industrial estate,Newcastle NSW, with the office and hangar complex errected.

The heliport, which will service the need of tourism, business and emergency services in the region, is being built on land adjacent to the Hunter River.

According to Director and Chief Pilot Stephen Forgacs Jnr, the heliport will be first class facility providing a direct link between Newcastle, Sydney and the surrounding region.

“With the completion on this complex, Newcastle will become one of the few cities in Australia to have a heliport just minutes from the heart of the CBD”.

“The Steel River site is an exceptional location for the regional heliport. Not only is it close to the city, but it also offers easy access to the Hunter Valley”

As well as providing landing pads for helicopters, the Newcastle Regional Heliport will include a hanger for helicopter storage, an administration building and a training complex.

The heliport will be available to emergency services including the NSW Rural Fire Service, State Forests of NSW, National Parks and Wildlife Service, SES and the NSW Police Force. In critical situations, the heliport also has the capacity to be used as staging areas for the Central, South and North Coast regions.

Aero Logistics Pty Ltd is the sole owner and operator of the heliport and will operate its helicopters from the base permanently.

The heliport has approval to operate 7 days a week from 600am til 1000pm daily, emergency services exempt. Flight paths are along the south arm of the Hunter River which avoids residential areas on departure and arrivals to the heliport.

It will also be night capable with night lighting on the main FATO area, there will be Jet A and Avgas available, as well as overnight parking for transiting helicopters.

This project has taken 4 years to be realised due to the rigourous demands placed on this type of development from councils and Govt bodies.

Construction of the Newcastle Regional heliport is expected to be completed in late December 2003.

So, where is it??

Obviously not in Hannell St where the two previous heliports have been. If you are looking north at the Hunter, in mayfield west, you are not as convenient to the city as SB's place.

How about a map? How big a machine is allowed in? Don't be a tease!:E

Charlie,

The original post wasnt meant to be a tease , it was intended to make our industry aware that there is a new heliport in town that will in the long run be the only suitable "commercial helipad"
available in newcastle.

Sure at the moment it is not as convinient as SB'S helipad, however it is only a 5 min drive from the site to the CBD, it has ample room to fit 10+ light to medium helos at any one time, and night and fuelling capabilitys. and has the full blessing of council, the local community and members of parliament alike.

to answer your questions though,

the site is on the southern side of the south arm of the hunter river about 200 m south west of the tourle st bridge, i presume you know it as you seem to know the newcastle area.

Noise test have concluded that we are not limited to any type of machine currently made today.

If you are a private operator or an commercial operator i would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

This has been a long project and im sure you will see the benefits of this facility once operational.

Thankyou for your enquiry though

Belly,

In the early days there was some speculation that the Hunter Reigon Westpac Helicopter was to be moved forcibly to this site and out of Broadmedow. Is this the case?

Will it have a GPSNPA and are there any special airspace arrangements with the nearby WLM Base?

200psi,

The westpac Guys are totally independant and will not be forced to move from thier current base, after all they have just recently upgraded thier facility at broadmeadow, however they are welcome to use our facility if needed for any reason.

At this stage no GPSNPA but down the track it may be an option if called for.

airspace requirements with willy just require a simple courtesy call inbound and outbound when active.

cheers

So female pilots don't need to call first then? :E
