AN investigation into a fatal helicopter crash has found that the pilot was flying too close to the ground and was inexperienced for that particular flight.
And it found that his overall flying experience on helicopters was overstated in the pilot's flying book.
David Reid (42) died in August of last year when the helicopter he was piloting crashed in bad weather as he was heading to the Tralee races to collect three passengers to bring them back to Dublin.
Mr Reid, a father of two from Blackhorse Avenue in Dublin, was the sole occupant of the Bell Jet Ranger when the accident happened and had just come from refuelling at Kerry airport.
Locals found the wreck at Croaghskearda near Dingle but a fire had destroyed most of the aircraft.
A report by the Air Accident Investigation Unit of the Department of Transport, published yesterday, said Mr Reid lacked operational experience in the demanding conditions on August 28.
And he did not comply with the limitations laid down by the Irish Aviation Authority for minimum helicopter heights and visual flight rules.
"Anomalies were found in the pilot's flying book which sought to overstate his overall flying experience on helicopters," the report's findings also read.
It said the probable cause of the accident was when the pilot lost adequate visual references and his inability to maintain clearance from the ground after going into "dense fog conditions".
The report did, however, find that Mr Reid was properly licensed and medically fit to conduct the flight and there was no evidence of any helicopter malfunction before the crash.
