Great idea. I had registered my intention to get airborne on the day with AOPA but this is a great excuse to actually go somewhere. Rather than just take the G meter in the Skybolt from plus 4 to minus 2 in as sensuous a manner as possible. Providing the weather between Leicester and Old Warden is acceptable and the ground reasonably firm I hope to be there.

PRESS RELEASE

The Shuttleworth Collection Celebrates A Century of Flight

WEDNESDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2003

One hundred years ago on the 17th December 1903 the Wright brothers achieved the first manned, powered and sustained flight on the sands at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA

The world famous Shuttleworth Collection of historic aeroplanes cordially invites Ladies and Gentlemen of the press to visit Old Warden Aerodrome on the above date, arrival may be anytime after 9am with the flying expected to begin at 10.30am.

It is hoped, weather permitting that we will fly the Bristol Boxkite, Miles Magister or Blackburn Monoplane. In addition to the flying demonstration there will be ample opportunity for our experienced staff to show you this unique Collection of aircraft that are kept in airworthy condition.

As well as the aeroplanes there are a number of historic road vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and other related memorabilia.

This celebration is in recognition the great pioneering achievements made by the early aviators. One hundred years on from the Wright Brothers flight in America the Shuttleworth Collection in Bedforshire houses one the world’s truly outstanding Collections of early aeroplanes.

The world’s oldest British built aeroplane the Blackburn Monoplane Type “D”, an original Bleriot and Deperdussin can be seen among the many exhibits at the Shuttleworth Collection.

We look forward to welcoming to this unique collection of aviation heritage and celebrating with us this historic anniversary.

Can you pop an update on surface conditions at Old Warden prior to the event and keep it current please. Our aircraft really does not like soft ground, or indeed a rough surface. Much obliged.

4th Dec 2003, 01:10
G-KEST,

Sad to say, Old Friend, it's still as rough as when you last visited and it'll remain so until the end of next year.

Ask Grandad Biggles nicely when ou arive and I'm sure he'll let you land long, where the suface is a lot smooher.

See you Friday,
A

Having given the Shuttleworth event a plug in my December editorial, I rang a couple of week back for prior permission - I gather the list is only just about to open.

Just to be clear on the point, can we fly-in visitors turn up any time after 10.35? - It's just that many of us are planning our own little re-enactment before departing for Old Warden.

I'll bring a bowl of laundry and soapy water in the back of the Cub: one landing/t-o at Old Warden should see that lot clean :p

Grandad Biggles
5th Dec 2003, 03:11
The airfield will be open from 1000 until sunset (around 1542, I think), if the surface and weather conditions are suitable.
We will be able to judge better nearer the day of what can be anticipated but no accurate indication until the day itself, of course
There are no landing slots. We do have a small flying programme throughout the day and subject to that we will slot your arrival to suit. We may ask you to hold off!

G-KEST
I think we will be able to organise a long land. We will try to work something out on the day if needed

Well I feel I have to do something Aviation on that day, so I will pop over even if the weather is poo.

RAFM closed for a party for the suits that day so OW it is.

MotF
Well, Great in't it. RAFM closed for suits. I think that's appaling. However, O/W is, frankly, so much more a 'total aviation' place. and -er- there's flying there, while Hendon, useful Museum though it is, is moribund for action. Still. Fop's PR dept need a good kick for such a shockingly elietist decision for a so-called national museum.
Point made, off to hose down now...

I am afraid the secret is out.
We hope to have a flypast by the Reds at 14-15 although nothing can be absolute
There is also to possibility that there will be flypasts by some other military jet types during the day. Timimg for that is less certain so I guess that can be the surprise

Should be a great day, lets just hope for the best of the weather.

For those who might find it useful the longer length of 03/21 will be available thereby easing the bumpiness at the 21 threshold, providing you can speak with us on 130.7 as we need to control the use of the road crossing.

I was hoping to lead our 4-ship over to Old Warden from the covert Oxonian airbase, weather permitting. But I now have to go to work, so shall be paxing BHX-FRA-HAM courtesy of Lufthansa instead.

I also had the chance to go to a function at the RAFM. But if I'd known that the genpub were being denied access for the day, I'd have boycotted it on principle.

Best news of the day - chum Airbedane has got his medical back so hopefully he'll be having a happy time this time next week at Old Warden!

Weather for tomorrow is looking very promising
I inspected the runway today and its looking perfect, very slightly soft on the surface and firm below the top 5 mm
Maggi, Tiger and Falcon all flew today
The airfield is in superb condition and the grass runways stand out really well
For those that may need it, the extension will be available and College road will be manned.
All indications are that we will be using Runway 21, LH circuit
There are Fast jet transits planned including the Reds, not forgetting and most importantly our own aircraft throughout the day
Boxkite due to fly at 10-35 in the morning and at 15-35 in the afternoon
Therefore very important that you PPR and if NON RADIO call for a brief and ETA before setting out

You might even get on the tele or radio as there are live broadcasts planned.
Should be a fantastic day
Have a safe one everyone and keep a good lookout
Lastly congrats to Airbedane for flight as captain, good to hear you from your natural environs again. Cheers!!

Thanks for the good wishes chaps, but a bigger thank you is due to Hairyplane for letting me use his Maggie today for my first flight as Captain since the re-issue of my medical cert last week - it's been a long, hard road!

I'll be flying at Old Warden tomorow, but not in the display (not enough recency). Do we know how many other PPRuNers will be there??

What time are the reds?
I might see if I can get back from Welwyn GC in time to see the 15:35 flight of the boxkite.

Office commitments and distinct lack of flexi and holiday entitlement meant that I had to drive down the A1 this morning heartily wishing I could turn right towards Shuttleworth!

It's a long shot but I might just be able to wangle an early escape.

Well done indeed, Airedane. Extremely glad to know you're back at the helm again as Captain.

Our little PA28 4-ship was due off at 0930 for a qucik whizz around the Cotswolds; unfortunately without me as I'll be peering down from some airway in the back of a Frankfurt-bound LH flight from Birmigoom. But hopefully I'll be able to see others enjoying the day.

Good luck for all at OW - looks like a perfect day even for the Boxkite?

So I just had to ring Airbedane to tell him! Hope the Tiger Moth trip goes well, you lucky old bug.ger!

Thanks also to Luton Approach who were doing a great job dealing with large numbers of aircraft (including me) today.

Well I drove like a madman up the A1. Left Welwyn GC at 15:15 and drove in the gates at Old Warden at 15:35 just in time to swing into a space and jump out to watch the boxkite start its takeoff waddle.

Classic scenes. What beautiful end to a winter day. Watching the boxkite flying in the sunset. I hope MOTF (who I assume was one of the characters on the roof by the tower) does it justice with his photos.

Still did not have the nerve to ask who was PPRuNer!

Thanks to everyone who organised it.

DamienB - well done for making it at the last minute.

Grandad Biggles - did you enjoy watching the Box from 1500ft in the Tiger at 1535Z, (or 1035 Eastern Standard Time).

I know Vintage ATCO is going to tabulate the full compliment of visitors, but I believe the final number was over 100 - well done and thanks to all who made it.

Just like someone posted earlier. I am a shy retiring flower and don't post very often, leave alone actually go up to people and say " do you Prune? ".

However, may I please add my sincere thanks and appreciation to all at OW last week. As someone who owes his whole working life of 30+ years to aviation and still can't believe how lucky he is to still be involved with it, it was a historic day. How better to celebrate the 100 years of flight?

All the more enjoyable since it wasn't advertised as far as I know, and so you knew that everyone who attended were committed air-heads.

I too made the firm resolve to join SVAS and help in whatever way I can to support the collection.

My first job in aviation in 1969 had me working as a general dogsbody at Coventry, and I well remember having to clean Hairyplanes Falcon EEG, so it was also lovely to see it flying on the day.

Apologies for the rambling, probably won't post again now for months.
