Australia's National Jet Systems Wins US$70 MLN Freight Contract

BRISBANE, Oct 22 Asia Pulse - Adelaide-based National Jet Systems Pty Ltd has secured a $A100 million ($US69.85 million) contract to operate Australia's largest overnight freight service, including the country's postal service.

The specialist air service company, a subsidiary of UK group Cobham plc, will operate Boeing 727 freighter aircraft for Australian air Express ,a joint venture between Australia Post and Qantas .

To fulfill the contract, National Jet will purchase six Boeing 727 aircraft and other assets previously owned by the collapsed TransAustralian Air Pty Ltd, now under administration.

National Jet will also take on about 100 staff and jet base operations in Melbourne to service the network throughout Australia.

The contract includes the delivery of 59 million kilograms of freight to Australia's capital cities each year, greatly expanding National Jet's existing air freight operations.

National Jet employs more than 1000 staff across Australia and Papua New Guinea, and operates more than 40 aircraft, making it Australia's third largest high capacity aircraft operator.

National Jet managing director Daniela Marsilli said the new contract would provide greater diversification of revenue for the company and strengthen its existing ties with AaE.

Isn't a one horse race called a walk over.

One doesn't really win something when there is no competition!

Just a question about this. Will the 727's come to YPAD for their maintainence now or will they continue to go elsewhere?

Cheers

Emergencybus

Do tell what real competition is:

1. Here in Oz
2. Able to complete the 727 deal
3. Has the aircraft capacity
4 Has the skills

other than NJS? Might need more than 23 Metro's for any Oz based freight dog to carry the load as stated in the media release.

Are the six "new" 727s additional to the fleet NJS is already flying for Australian Air Express, or will they replace the existing fleet?

same 72s, now owned/leased by NJS to fullfill the contract with AAE.

Spagiola: They wont replace the existing 146's as they are the only things that can get into and out of Sydney during the curfew.

Imagine the look on Mr Albaneese's face if a 72 tried its luck in the middle of the night !

Nice to see an "Aussie" company picking up after a failed "Aussie" company, rather than a quick & dirty grab for assets!!!

Good luck to them.

PS, Do they need a Load Controller???:O

FR Aviation, part of the Alan Cobham group of companies. A pretty good outfit. Very big in the niche mission specialist area. If NJS had to be owned by a mob offshore then they could do a whole lot worse than FRA.

Well they were started by Aussies,
They employ mostly Aussies,
just happened to have been bought by the Poms.

An Aussie that lives in the UK isn't automatically a Pom so why is an Aussie company now owned by a Pommie company no longer considered Aussie?

"Industry veteran Neil Hansford says he is well advanced with the launch of Australian Challenge Airways next year. The carrier will be a regional narrow body freight only airline financed in Australia and drawing on the pool of experience available from the failure of Ansett Airlines in September 2001. Australian Challenge Airways has made the pre-application for the AOC, says Australia-based Hansford, who will head up the company as CEO. Routes and frequencies are still to be finalised."

After the debacle we have just witnessed with TAA, I doubt if AaE will be trying any "new boys" on the block for many years to come.
