Fellas, I know this isn't relatively about flying so please forgive me!!!!

I was wondering if anyone could give me the number for optometry at OASC, RAF Cranwell???

Also, if anyone would happen to know the cp rating for the ops spt branch RAF Regt then that would also be of much help!

You need CP2 for Ops Spt Regt, and 8/2 vision normally. At least you did when I was holding at OASC and had all the medical stuff to hand...!

I have cp3 so this is now becoming rather confusing to me as I've got OASC SUB FORM 657 in my hand which the sqn ldr has ticked off saying that I was ok for it.

The fact it appears I'm cleared fit for ALM and infantry in the army( or even my class 1 with the CAA!!!) makes me confused as to why I wouldn't be with the Regt.

Thanks for the info above, I'll keep enquiring and if anyone has got that no. for sleaford tech that'd be much appreciated as I'll have to go in to one tomorrow about this!!!

01400 261201 takes you to Cranwell. I don't know the Optometry number, but as it's not in use every day I think you're best to ask for OASC Medical Boards Reception or OASC Medical Boards Admin and ask them for advice.

If you have a military phone, dial 192, and ask for optometry at Cranwell.

If you have a civil phone ring your nearest military unit, local rates, wait until the MOD operator answers, then ask for optometry at Cranwell. Much cheaper than ringing Cranwell. You get the same MOD operator. <g>.

Quite so. If you live in Newquay, ring St Mawgan. The phone'll be put through to.......Dumbarton. Where some unsuspecting soul will try to find his/her way through the computerised Cranwell phone book.

And yet once you used to be able to ring Cranwell and ask...

Does anyone really believe that Dumbarton would be able to find Optometry at Cranwell in their directory? You'ld probably get the squash courts at Mount Pleasant.

Needing to spek to my boss once before a meeting, I pulled into a layby and, as I couldn't remember his office number, called Dumbarton. Who told me that there was no such person as OC *** sqn.... I then did the usual thing, rang a mate and asked him to look up the number in the station phonebook, got the number and chatted to the boss. When I got back, we rang the Dumb ones from his office to ask for his number.......he then told them that yes, he b£oody well did exist and they'd better add his number to their list. "I canna do thaat, caller" replied the functionary at the other end......

What an utter ar$e system this Dumbarton nonsense is...... I was also once told that there's no 'Nine' squadron - because it's listed as 'IX'.......

Getting the wrong number given to you ('call dumped') because they can't find the right one in the allowed time limit is quite common - it's called 'Being Dumbartoned'. A bit like this silly 188 or whatever it is for Directory Enquiries - there was an employee at one of these new set ups who just gave every caller the number for the local Pizza Hut in order to clock up bonuses for himself!

Errr... been out over a year now, but I remember having access on line (MOD Intranet) to an extensive phone directory, which listed every post, including the incumbents name and extension. It was joint service, so listed Army and Navy posts as well. Very useful... had a shortcut icon on my MS Office toolbar I seem to remember. Suggest a call to CISEng or Stn Cdr's PA for details.

And "Dumbarton Doris'" general military knowledge leaves a lot to be desired. I too tried to get a number for OC **Sqn. The conversation went like this:

TH: OC ** Sqn at RAF &&&& please.
DD: We haven't got an OC ** Sqn.
TH: Have you got ** Sqn.
DD: Yes (or possibly "aye"), and we've got OC A Flt and OC B Flt, but no OC ** Sqn.
TH: OK, what's the first number under ** Sqn then.
DD: Oh (or possibly och), that's "Officer Commanding"!
TH: *&%$*!

am considering a new career in the future and this may appeal.

The number for optometry at Cranwell is Ext 6787. Thats the people who send me my contact lenses anyway, hope it helps.

If you want to join the RAF Regiment, ISITD, then you apply through OASC at Cranwell, then do the 24 week IOT course at Cranwell, then go to Honington to do the Junior Regt Officers' Course (JROC).
As I understand it, you then get streamed to a field sqn or a Rapier sqn.

Field Sqn : Airfield defence, parachute insertion (2 Sqn RAF Regt)

Rapier Sqn: After Rapier OCU at Honington, get posted around the UK and Falklands to operate the Rapier Field Standard 'C'.

According to popular belief, MT Control at Digby are the best POC for anything 'cos I'm sure they run the RAF! Tel nos, optometry, the lot...
