GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A Fenton Township man is dead after the helicopter he was piloting crashed into a Genesee County lake.

Witnesses to the 12:30 p.m. crash Saturday told the Genesee County Sheriff's Department the helicopter had been flying close to the water.

Authorities are investigating what prompted the crash. A cause of death for the pilot, Joseph Brasher, 47, has not yet been determined.

Brasher's passenger in the helicopter, Greg Palinsky, 44 of Mt. Morris Township is in good condition, Mike Rau, an official with the sheriff's department told The Flint Journal. Rau said Palinsky swam to safety.

Divers pulled Brasher's body from Copneconic Lake about 90 minutes after the crash and were unable to resuscitate him. The crash occurred near the border of Genesee and Oakland counties.

Brasher's body was not in the helicopter when it was found, leading police to believe he may have tried to swim to shore.

The two-seater Schweizer helicopter was found submerged in about ten feet of water. It had left Dalton Airport in Mt. Morris Township at about 11:30 a.m.
