Help!
I am trying to save a video input from a video camera and/or vcr as an avi file for playback on the PC.
I can't find anything within XP that will record anything... just play back in Real Player and Media Player.
Do I need any additional hardware? Have an S video socket and Firewire port on the pc...

Have a look under accesories and you'll find windows movie maker. Never used it so can't comment. I use Pinnacle Studio 8 which is commercial software. There is plenty of software available, at the end of the day you pay your money and take your choice.

XP home or Pro? - not sure about pro but home has windows movie maker built in. That should import your vid and save it as avi.
Whoops, beaten to it by spanners, I too use pinnacle. I've just fired up movie maker and all it sees is my tv card but maybe that's cos I haven't got my cam connected.

...I don't seem to have a shortcut for it.
What are its properties? Where can I find the .exe file?

In xp home it's under Start, Accessories.

The shortcut wasn't in Accessories.....
Found it now but left the camera at home so haven't been able to try it yet. Can't see how to configure it though. Do I need extra hardware? The Device Manager shows a video capture device...
Its XP Home edition.

Just done a trial run. As soon as I connected the DV and turned on it was recognised by XP (via firewire port). Opened movie maker and came up straight away seeing the dv cam. Start stop controls available through the PC etc as normal. Default recording is to med quality wmv format but you can change it to DV quality avi - just be warned that it takes up a lot of disc space - 21 seconds is 76.9 mb. So it's worth converting to mpg2. They are about 150mb for 3.5 minutes.

Well I can't get mine to work!
Its shows No Video Capture Device Connected.
Its not a digital camcorder but is connected through an S video lead and the way I read the manual it should download to pc.
When I run Windows Movie Maker there doesn't seem to be an option anywhere to select the type of capture device.
Do I need a TV card or similar?

Try this - not sure if it will work without any sort of capture card but the s vid must go somewhere.
Open movie maker - then File, record - then the button 'change device' - then configure - then video source and try composite or camera/s video and see what happens. You should get a preview on the PC but try recording anyway and see what happens.
The S-video might be a TV out only socket. What's the make/model of video card and what's the camera?

ORAC Its a Samsung VP-L750 camcorder and the video card shows as a RADEON IGP 340M..

It's not a card, but an integrated video chip (http://mirror.ati.com/products/radeonigp/rigp340m.html). It's video out only, you need to buy a video capture device.
I'd suggest something external like the Dazzle Fusion (http://www.scancom.ltd.uk/products/dazzle/fusion.htm) which uses a USB port, they're cheaper than a firewire device.

You have the ATI Radeon IGP 320 Chipset, with integrated onboard video. That motherboard only has a TV Out Card, there is no Video In.
Here is the latest Addendum listing the TV-OUT:

I would suggest getting a good Video Card like a GeForce4 Ti4200 with VIVO.

Its a Compaq Presario 1500, Pentium 4 2.4GHz with 256DDR.

I checked the specs on all the Presario 1500's and none of them have video in.
ORAC listed a converter from Belkin that should do the trick for you. I was searching and here are some additional options:
