Great news. Our Asian network is increasing rapidly. Let's hope that the next big announcement concerning new routes involves transatlantic routes; I don't mean Florida.

There must surely be a market from BHX daily year-round to Atlanta, Philly, and Toronto in the Summer (say 3/4 week in winter).

Is the BHX runway long enough for intercontinental operations? What types can operate with decent payloads, or does everything stop over en route?

Nothing on the Emirates website about the second flight, however, it is expected to be a A330 EK37/38 arr 1835 dept 1955.

Great news for BHX !

The Emirates evening flight is bookable on their website.

The main runway at Birmingham is 2605 metres long (about 8500ft). This is less than ideal, but does allow non-stop flights within about a 3800 mile radius with typically A-310, A-330 and B-767 equipment.

Hopefully when the Government white paper on airports policy is published BHX will be favoured for expansion and moves will be made to lengthen the main runway to 3000+ metres.

Emirates' route plans for 2004 should be released pretty soon; hoping very much this time that Dublin will be included.

There's a strong population of Irish descent in Australia and no airline has direct services; EK could tap into that, but there's a lot more besides, given the extent of its services via DXB: ASEAN, North Asia, the middle east, South and East Africa and India.

Come on guys - make it happen!

I would expect new EK destinations to include

Dublin, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, Geneva, Copenhagen and Stockholm.

EK has SO much potential in Europe, and all those planes on order have to fly somewhere!

Its now official :-

Emirates, the Dubai based international airline, will launch a second daily service to and from Birmingham from next spring.

The award winning carrier's second daily flight will begin operating on March 10th, 2004 and, like the current daily service, will be operated by a state of the art 285-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

The second service from Birmingham, EK038, will depart at 1955 hrs arriving in Dubai at 0655 hrs the following morning - ideally timed for connections to onward flights to destinations such as Sydney, Brisbane, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Karachi, Bahrain and Muscat. The return flight EK037 will depart from Dubai at 1445 hrs and arrive in Birmingham at 1835 hrs.

Maurice Flanagan, Emirates' Vice Chairman and Group President, said: "When we launched our Birmingham route in December 2000, we knew it would do well, and so it has, in no small way thanks to the strength of our reputation and excellence of our in-flight service.

"Our expansion continues apace as more and more people want to experience Emirates' award-winning customer service. Dubai offers both a fantastic destination - be that for tourism or commerce - and a perfect geographical point to break long journeys, with connections to countless other destinations that lie further afield on the Emirates' network."

The development will also boost Birmingham's cargo capacity by 15 tonnes a day giving customers of Emirates SkyCargo greater flexibility.

The carrier already operates the daily EK039/040 between Birmingham and Dubai, offering customers a 1400hrs departure from the airport.

The additional flight comes on top of Emirates' three services a day from Heathrow, three daily flights from Gatwick and double daily from Manchester.

For more information on Emirates, see www.emirates.com/uk.

Chiglet, we're not going to triple daily just yet...though the unofficial word is sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we can look forward to 777s on the EK17/18 from 19th March.

Noticed triple sevens on the BHX of late!

BHX has seen 777's over the past week due to very high loads mainly due to the International Textile and Machinery exhibition being held over at the NEC.

The second service has been announced early (ahead of the World Travel Market) due to high bookings on the existing service.

Wasn't there a plan to operate into Glasgow? Or was that a piper dream? And when are services going to start to the US (obviously with respect to delivery of the 340-600)?
