So who said what??

As a pilot, who has attended previous conferences as a delegate...and as an airline representative I was wondering who said what this year?

Was it all doom and gloom? Did the charter carriers predict the end of the world by October 31st!!?!?!

I would hope that perhaps delegates saw some light at the end of the tunnel this year.....

Balpa reckon there are over 800 unemployed low hrs pilots!

one or two airlines sounded hopeful for next year

Well, that is hardly surprising... but what you must remember is that not all unempolyed pilots have the same characteristics.

If you look at the industry today in the UK, it seems to be as optimistic as it has been for 2 years or more.

Let's hope that it stays that way, because a little expansion and a few retirements will knock a hole in the 800 figure.

And remeber that not all licence holders are necessarily employable immediately.

Good luck.

Did they give a number for the 1000hr + airline wannabies out there?

Most instructor now are sitting between 1000 and 2000 hrs

The '800' figure was actually quoted by Hamrah, who was there in his Astraeus capacity.

I can't remember the exact phrase he used, but I have the impression stuck in my mind he was including hour building instructors.

Let's hope he was!

I'd say 1,100 <300hrs Frzn ATPL holders +

400 instructors/ops desk workers/flying someone quasi commercial twin +

400 more in training or half way through and have the IR on hold +

Gawd knows how many European experienced pilots with their beady eyes on UK based flying jobs. Aero Lloyd of Germany went bust this week - no idea how many experienced jet pilots they had... bet it was dozens and dozens and dozens. Wonder where there CV's are headed...

But. Brutal reality aside - an unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through - barghh! If you looked at the odds all the time you either never start or slit your wrists.

Fact is the industry is picking up, most airlines are going to recruit over the winter, next year things will grow and over the next 10 things will nearly double in the EU when it comes to air travel.

Against that backdrop now might just be the right time to take the plunge and train with an eye to positioning you just right to catch the upswing. Just don't burn any bridges at work along the way ;)

Cheers

I was looking at the last 2 years of lic issues.

makes for some pretty interesting reading.

152 new FI's compared to 86!!!!

and 848 compared to 703 Cpls

presumably quite a few of the cpls will be ICAO transfers but thats alot of new pilots on the market.

Based on a show of hands, there was a majority of low hours people <500 hours there all hoping and hoping.

Unfortunately the majority of airlines in attendance were mainly jet operators, who would like people to have a good few hours, preferably at least some, you guessed it, turbo prop time under the belt.

Shame really there weren't more of the turbo prop guys there who may have been able to offer those in the low hours category the opportunities that would be very much welcomed.

Perhaps it's tending to become a forum for airlines to let people know how many new aircraft they have options on and just which kit they will be fitted with.

EasyJet were the one company who indicated a requirement for a *significant* number of people - but only those with a bit more than light piston time.

Despite signals that things are on the move, it may well be quite some time before the airlines are forced to reduce their entry requirements. In the meantime there are plenty of experienced people ahead of the piston engined puddle jumpers.

China airlines arrived at the last minute saying they were looking for a 100 pilots. Did anyone have any luck in finding out any more (apart from what was in the info pack of course)?

The useful information I recieved was, if you've got 500+hrs on jets or turbo props in a commercial environment we might consider asking you for an interview. If not......

Great news, I must be able to find those 500hrs some how!!!!!!!!

Dont bet on it, I've quite a few friends with 1000+ hours turboprop getting told "well if you had a type rating on a 737/57/320"
or
" we are only recruiting 200 hour cadets who can pay for their own rating you've too many hours"

They're stuck in limbo really. Many feel at the moment their years of blatting around in tprops a total waste of time as far as the next job goes.
