Hello flyers,

Advice needed from those you are flying in Africa. About to move there soon as an expat and I was wondering what are the important things I should put in my luggages.

Silly answers are welcomed(to some degree) but smart ideas are definitely most welcomed.

FLM

P.s: I'm young, not married and hate mosquitoes. I heard those insects enjoy biting specially when there's the 8hrs bottle to throttle curfew....

1. Patience
2. Moz repellent, malaria TREATMENT meds & self-test blood kit.
3. Hand sanitizer.
4. Sense of humour
5. Something to keep you busy...laptop, ipod, books ect. ect.

Coartem, produced by Novartis is one of the best mozzie treatment meds, no side effects, approved by av doctors clears up malaria/symptoms in 3-4 days.

enjoy the african experiance.

Dont take doxycycline to avoid malaria it turns u bright red due to its sun sensitivity factors and gives the jitters.

Even more important than what to take while you are there is to remember to take along some anti-malaria medication for when you are on leave. Halfan is the usual thing.

One of our local ex-pats just died of cerebral malaria while he was in the States. He must have thought he had a touch of the flu or a hangover until it was too late. And 'too late' = 3 days or so.

If you can put up with the annoyance an insecticide-impregnated net is a good idea, along with trying to avoid being bitten.

And be sure to check out the 'You have been warned' advice on the Jet Blast forum.

Take along your sense of humour and do try not to lose it while you are there.

Good luck!

Dear Sir

The Malaria Self test is definately a brilliant I dea, and thereafter a batch Of Coartem is the best thing you can do for yourself it's a relatively new medicine, made in South Africa, however I am a chronic sufferer of this dreaded illness, at least once a year and I was very impressed as Coartem made me feel better after 4 hours!

Halfan however is the worst mistake you can make as this stuff is apparantly not a good idea if you have any kind of Heart problem, known or unknown, Anti Malaria medication in most cases taken over a lon period of time will definately stuff up your system and may have longer term consecquences such as memory loss, loss of eyesight and in severe cases death. In a study conducted in America they have found that 100% of woman over 90 that have used these drugs eventually die.

Other than that a good idea is to have Rather strong painkillers such a Brufen 600, and some local anaesthetic(oral) for those day when your toothies become unbearable sore and you dont want to go to the local butcher to have them removed.

Hand sanitiser, definately as I have seen a guy just shaking hands with some of these bastards developing sores on their hands that have to be cut out, sometimes unfotunately you have to shake hands with them to keep the protocol correct.

And lastly some condoms, so you dont make a mess on the sheets, stay away from all other woman white black pink or purple as you will die

And on that cheerful note!!
Have a good trip
