Nz Atpl Law

I'm starting on ATPL's, giving Law and HF a go first. Problem is, with Law there's no set text. Has anyone out there recenetly sat ATPL Law and if so, what is the best way to study it? I'm studying the rest through PPSC.

You should note recommended study subjects from the ASL web site, have a dam good read up on 135, 91... upto date?, + also make sure you are familiar with 121, and 125.there are quite a few AC'S out there now too!. This includes dangeous goods, accidents..Keep in mind that the law exam has a time limit before you gain the total qualification.you should have all the study down load- able form the caa web site.Im doing all my other subjects first and will try to 'wing it' with a regional before i do my law exam.. ( fingers crossed!)

Read the question. Then read it again.
Then try to figure out just what the question is!

Most of the problem it that it is more of an english exam.

G'day DAN, whilst my experience of Law is not necessarily recent, I don't know that it has changed much in the last couple of years. The syllabus is available in AC61, although it's debatable whether this is helpful or not - it's just a bloody long list!
The exam is basically IR law (know it!) with some extras thrown in. I got a hold of parts 121/125 and went through all the bits of the planning manual (sorry NZAIP Part 1!:yuk: ) that you might normally skip - Oceanic procedures(in particular),Radar services,ATC separation etc. Then finally brush up on instrument approach chart reading - you'll get about 5 questions from a foreign plate (Raro or similar).
NZ CARs are downloadable from the net.
As jetsetter mentioned, there is a 5 year validity period on ATPL Law, ie you must be exercising the privileges of your (ATPL ) licence within 5 years of passing the exam. If you're not sure you'll have a command on an (ATPL required ) A/C in 5 years from now(that is a distinct possibilty in NZ if you've just got a CPL) then give thought to leaving law till near the end.

Have to say,I considered it one of the easier ATPLs and less "englishy" than the other 3 laws.

Havn't done law myself for reasons of validity as mentioned by other above. If you do decide to, Im told that by downloading the parts mentioned by outboundjetsetter you will have all the info needed. Alternitivly there is a Trevor Tom IFR law manual which as the ATPL Law in it also.

HF isn't a bad place to start (I think thats what I began with).

For some of the other subjects try www.atplsolutions.co.nz - Ive done a coulple via these guys and it made things easier.

As mentioned by flyby_kiw, www.atplsolutions.co.nz are a really good place to get info on systems, nav-aids, and courses on nav and flight planning. Thankfully they have just added Law as well. I used these notes, did 3 1/2 days study, was in the exam room for 1/2 an hour and ended up with 90%. The law notes are a little pricy ($160) but well worth it.

Not sure where you are at with your other exams. But I'd suggest doing Law as your last subject.

It's the only one to lapse.

I'm the person that publishes the notes they are talking about on ATPL Solutions. You can order a CD version of them from the website or a hard copy from me directly if you wish.

They are 230 pages long with nine sample papers including answers and references. You will need your own copy of the new AIP Vol 1.

I regularly update these, (last time at the beginning of the month) and use them all the time converting the ATPLs for all Air NZ's contract guys.

P.S. the guys are right, unless you think that you will have a need for an ATPL within 5 years, It might pay to wait before sitting the exam.

I used this guy's training notes a little while ago and found no surprises in the exam.

They were pretty comprehensive but the sample papers were what made them worth the high cost.

contrary to what thump and go says it is not basically an IFR law paper, it is mainly on part 121 and 125. (them being the heavy stuff)

Just sat a week ago, using a CD from these guys. 91% - Easy.
Just read all the stuff about 121,125,91,92 and Airspace in a few days, between falling to sleep because it is so boring!, Did the practice exams about 3 times each. ASL Practice exam. A wee bit of revision of the topics covered by ASL.
