Army Air Corps Eyesight

I heard that you don't need perfect eyesight to be a pilot in the army but can't find out what the standards are. Does anyone know?

Guys does anyone have a number to speak directly to the AAC about medical standards.(perhaps at Middle Wallop??) I've spoken to the AFCO, though they're not much help!!

Also heard from them that there's a year waiting list to get into Sandhurst. Anyone out there care to shed any light if poss??

Speak to your local Officer Recruiting Liaison guy. Go thru the OTC if you are at Uni, otherwise go to you local Army recruiting Office who will put you in touch with him.

I might be wrong here, but I doubt if the med centre at middle wallop will appreciate being phoned up and asked these sorts of questions if their number is published here.

As far as I was aware, eyesight standards are the same across the services, although again I may be wrong as RAF people do tend to have lifestyles that put their eyesight at risk and hair on their palms.

As for Sandhurst, some people always wimp out just before going so there is every chance that you could pick up a place if you are prepared to go at the last minute. Although whether there is a waiting list or not, I'm not sure. Once again ask your friendly RLO who has the answers to these sorts of questions.

Serving people generally don't keep abreast of the latest issues affecting the training side of life.

There is a difference in required eyesight standards between the services. At an eyesight test earlier this year I had the eyesight required to fly as a pilot in the Royal Navy and the AAC, but not the RAF.
The closest match I could find to what you are after is this:

If it's a future in the Hairy Arm Corpse you are thinking about I would suggest you have more to worry about than poor eyesight:E ...........maybe a very swift medical check of your judgement is in order here:rolleyes:

First off, most worth their cuff opticians will or should have eyesight req's for all three forces at hand somewhere. From experience though I know that RAF req's are slightly higher as they aim to recruit all aircrew with fast jet medical categories. I also know that RN will take candidates with slightly lower eyesight standards (good news for wrens) as purely rotary pilots. I would have expected this to be the same for the AAC but have heard of people being KO'ed at the slightest mention of anything less than "perfect eyesight" - which is itself a misnomer as 20/20 vision means by definition average eyesight.

If you want to be an officer in Gods Corps, then your at an advantage if you are short sighted and narrow minded would be a bonus, they could cut short your training :D

To Tiger Moth, The people you want to phone are the medical officers at Officers and Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC) at RAF Cranwell, I obviously am not going to publish a phone number here, but I'm sure a quick google search will do the job mate!

Not everything is a obvious as you first think.

I did 10 years Puma's before coming accross to fixed wing and best/worst part of 3 of those in the Emerald Isle...........hence I think i am reasonably qualified to make the very tongue in cheek comment I made:ok:
