Hi,

A meeting between the Airport Handling Services company and the Transport and Omnibus Workers' Union has been scheduled for today to resolve a wage strike at the Cape Town International Airport.

About 120 union members responsible for cleaning aircraft and terminals have been on strike since Sunday.
Only a few of the permanent staff were still at work yesterday.

Speaking from Johannesburg, the company's chairman, Lionel Jacobs, said a meeting had been scheduled for today to resolve the wage dispute.

"It's easy and possible to come to an agreement. We don't see a reason not to agree," he said.

On Wednesday he confirmed that the company had applied for an interdict to suspend the strike.

The company has asked for a 10- to 15-day suspension to allow the parties to come to an agreement.

The matter is to be heard in the Cape Town Labour Court today if the meeting between the parties fails to resolve the dispute.

Union negotiator Mario Jacobs has confirmed the meeting. He said the union's lawyers would oppose the application for an interdict.

The workers are demanding a wage increase of R2.44 an hour to raise their current rate to R10.

They are also demanding that their nightshift allowance be increased from 80 cents to R1.20 an hour.
