Hi,

BBC news release:

Budget airline easyJet has announced more cut-price routes from Tyneside to Europe and Scandinavia.
The airline will begin daily flight from Newcastle Airport to Copenhagen and Malaga from December 2003.

The company already flies from Tyneside to Prague, Paris, Alicante, Barcelona, Belfast and Bristol. The discount flight operator says it is "extremely pleased" with passenger numbers since the start of operations from Newcastle in March. A spokeswoman for the airline said: "There is a huge demand in the North East for low cost flights.

"We are delighted to be able to expand our services from Newcastle yet again, with the addition of exciting new routes to Malaga and Copenhagen, as well as increasing the number of daily flights to Bristol.

Additional aircraft

"As well as offering new business and leisure travel opportunities from Newcastle airport, the new routes will help to attract even more tourists into the North East and provide a huge boost to local businesses."

The expansion of services will mean that an additional aircraft will now be based in Newcastle. A spokesman for Newcastle Airport added: "We have managed to secure this aircraft a full six months ahead of schedule by convincing the airline that Newcastle offered the best market available to succeed with these new routes.

"In the process we managed to fight off competition for this plane from a number of other easyJet bases. "The new routes to Copenhagen and Malaga are an exciting development for the whole of the region and will, we are sure, be an outstanding success."

Newcastle is operated by Copenhagen airport.

I wouldn't say they operate they airport, they are a "strategic partner" that owns a 49% stake. They have a lot of input in the master planning of the airport, but don't have much input in the the day-to-day running of the airport. Still, it was only going to be a matter of time before a link between the two airports was established.

John

Copenhagen has a fifteen-year contract to run Newcastle Airport for the joint board. The present management are Copenhagen’s representatives.

In the previous post I was being ironic!

These new routes are excellent news for Newcastle and the Geordie people and it gives foreign visitors the chance to visit a beautiful place.

I'm glad easy are developing their presence at NCL, as most of these routes would never have started, if not for the low cost revolution. Lets hope they continue to expand with more aircraft and more routes. Its going to be a very busy 2004 at Newcastle, considering the expansion taking place and all the new routes/based aircraft. :D

P.S does anyone know if the new easy based aircraft is a 737-700 as AGP on a -300 is pushing it from runway 07!!!!!!!

Rumours have it as a 700 especially for LEMG!

By the way NCL's problem runway is 25 with the hill on the end!

Cheers
