"An airliner carrying 218 passengers and 11 crew sparked a fire alert yesterday morning shortly after landing at Dubai International Airport. Passengers jumped from the plane using emergency chutes after air traffic controllers noticed smoke and fire coming from the aircraft's landing gear. The aircraft, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 707 from Addis Ababa was taxiing towards the terminal at about 4am.
Mohammed Ghanim Al Ghaith, Director-General of the General Civil Aviation Authority, said the controllers immediately alerted the captain and fire services. "Fire fighters and rescue teams reacted swiftly and extinguished the blaze, which may have been caused by a hydraulic oil leak."
The passengers - all UAE residents - are safe, he said. Authorities will conduct a full investigation into the cause of the fire."
