Just wondering how long does it take to gain a command position within any of the operators in New Zealand! I know their are plenty of variables, but at the moment......

Cheers

Air Nelson has been fairly slow; Mount Cook has been fairly quick lately and Eagle is in between.

Eagle has been the fastest by far.
Mt Cook went through a fast stage recently with the increased number of aircraft.
Air Nelson is quite steady but has seen a lot of movement lately.

Can't really pick it.
Depends on the hireing of Air NZ and Cathay, as well as Freedom.

I think if you look at the trend over several years the simple answer is Eagle has the quickest progression to a command by a long shot. A couple of blips in Air Nelson/Mt Cook promotion "doth not maketh" them airlines where, generally, commands come quickly. This could be due to the fact that they pay progressively more than Eagle and that some of their pilots are there for the lifestyle. This opposed to Eagle which is often seen as a "stepping stone" to a so called "bigger & better" job (ie jet job).

Even with projected hiring, you'd imagine more would be sucked out of Eagle than the other two.

I know nothing about the NZ scene.

Can anyone briefly advise if Australian pilots
can simply apply for NZ positions? Are our
qualifications welcomed (eg ATPLs), do we
need a working visa etc?
