Isn’t it strange...

Yesterday when I checked the internal webpage under “Fuel policy”, there were two new bases stated - including all the destinations.

When I checked today – they had disappeared by all of a sudden… New update….

;) ;)

So, do we get any clues as to which airports they may be?

Girona-Barcelona & Berlin Schonefeld in 2004.
New base in UK in 2005, either RAF Finchingfield or Newcastle. However, Manchester would be option one but looks difficult.

Perhaps it is somewhere near the old RAF airfield at Finningley?

RAF Finingley (near York), sorry about that but it has such a weird name.

Phew, for a moment I thought you had a hot rumour about RAF Wethersfield, Essex, which is almost next door to the village Finchingfield and not too far from STN.

Security is excellent at Wethersfield, I think it is still an MoD police training centre.

Can't wait for Ryanair to go Transatlantic:-

Fly direct to New York!!! (Bangor, Maine)

hate to burst any bubbles but the fuel policy document alluded to only listed extsting routes. i'm not saying it won't happen but there was nothing new in it. lubeck already has 4 and girona has 8 routes. it may be nothing more than an error by somebody in ops who thought that multiple routes meant it must be a base.

Does anyone of Ryanair's intention to set up services from BFS or BHD. There have been many rumours but to date they have little more than this !

RAF Finningley is just about a mile or so from Bawtry about 10 mins from Donny and the A1,M62,M18,M180,M1...... Ideal catchment area for thousands of possible pax.
It has a 2000ft+ rwy and i think 4 hangers on site.
Why hasnt this gem been looked at before.!!!!!!

Peel holdings, (the current owners) say cargo ops may start out of Finningley as soon as 2004 but we will wait and see.!!!!

Local news reports all developements on the airfield and can be accessed online at...... www.doncasteronline.co.uk

As one who underwent flying training at Finningley, I can vouch for it being a marvellous place. Doncaster has a hideous and undeserved reputation for being a dump - it is not. Whatever negative things you may have heard, they almost certainly come from people who have never lived there. I lived there for over a year and grew to love it.

b the m - I assume you mean the Finningley runway is 2,000 metres plus. I doubt if 2,000 feet will cut it !

Talking of fuel policy, does Ryanair tanker fuel on most short sectors?

Say Mach Number
1st Oct 2003, 17:15
Yes tanker fuel say 95% of all routes.

The routes we take sector is not that its cheaper down route but because it was probably part of the deal to take fuel.

Afterall when we do take sector anywhere we only take sector back!

So my assumption is it cant be cheaper down there as we would fill er up! But we dont.

2000 feet! Phew!

Will MOL demand that the local MFI provides a wardrobe to put the four hangers in? Is this an indication of staffing levels perhaps?

SMN

Thanks for your reply. I wonder if you can help with the following one, which is what is the minimum field length that a 737-800 needs for a typical Ryanair sector, full load?

Say Mach Number
2nd Oct 2003, 07:55
Ryanair at the mo have a limitation for the 800 of 6500ft for planning purposes.

Eg the 800 does not do DUB Aberdeen because its only 6000ft yet have seen BA, BY767-300s, Sultan of Brunie A340 in there.

Its a company thing not a Boeing thing.

When was in Seattle think I can recollect a Boeing engineer stating that every Boeing built is designed to stop in 3000ft if it had to. Dont quote me it was a few years ago!

For info people - Finningley is 2,700m+ (2,741 I think) and is super wide as well - 60m+! No problem for any operators I think......

brabazon
2nd Oct 2003, 16:48
So why for planning purposes does Ryanair require longer runways than other airlines?

lost soul
2nd Oct 2003, 17:17
Lubeck R07 is 5912 ft from the GS at the moment! (Capt only landings)

garethjk22
2nd Oct 2003, 22:26
Ryanair have downrated engines (cost saving) so the t/o performance of the 738 is degraded and at a full load (which FR are frequently full) the performance is effected.

Finningley has a 2741 metre runway, with a take of distance of well over 3,000 (3191 i think) so more than capable of handling all but the very heavy very heavies!

brabazon
2nd Oct 2003, 23:59
What's the difference in thrust then and what sort of saving does it give - is it fuel burn or maintenance?

derated engines...what a rubbish...27k if required...
