According to Pacific Wings Mr. Boeing of Seattle want Air NZ to try its shiny new B773's for their long haul fleet. Anyone inside know anything about this?

Well if it's in Pac Wings, it's gotta be true!
Hell, Peter Clarke will probably be the test pilot!!

Long haul fleet replacement is an active project.

I guess we'll have to see whether Boeing signing off ANZES as safe in it's peer review will be worth their while, or whether the accountant's option of buying eurocrap for long haul is the outcome.

The Pacific ETOPS options are also being severely restricted by the closure of Midway ...

Midway is only used on flights between u.s and asia. Its closure dosnt bother anyone in our part of town. Johnston Atoll on the other hand closes today. Now thats a potential problem for Sth pacific / HNL operations. esp in a 737..

If Boeing get the ETOPS times they want for the ER, then a lot of those places won't matter anyway.

338 minutes isn't it?

Have they done the test flight from Auckland to Rio (I think) via the pole yet?

...and Sir Selwyn is going to fund 773's as penance!

Me thinks the 744's and the 763' are going to be around for a bit.

"Active review" of longhaul fleet taking place at the moment - NEWSFLASH - the type will be either from Boeing or Airbus - that's about all that can be said right now, strong arguments both ways, Airbus is clearly 'on a roll" in Australasia right now salewise and will be aggressive - it's all wait and see.

Halas, I think i did read of that longhaul flight being done already.

The current etops (B777) has gone back to 180-193min. (not sure on exact), due to the last B777 engine out incident, NZ-USA I'm informed.

Airbus are taking the market though, as seen in Europe, both in the large and small jets.

(I can see a 4-engine vs Twin discussion brewing here:} )

I find it hard to get enthused about Airbuses.

Dont know why, they just seem...dull:ouch:

What would Boeing's 777 sales pitch be?

Lower maintanance cost? What are the
economic pros and cons of the two aircraft?

Airbus - commonality between the flight decks and systems of the A32o, 330 and 340, therefore reduced training costs

Boeing 773ER - range, economy, effieciency.

Me thinks they'll have B773's and let the 744's go - and save on fuel.

I reckon they'll wait and see what happens with Qantas first.
