I have an IBM Thinkpad. I keep loosing memory. I clear history and cookies on a regular basis. Any ideas what I have neglected to do??

Any help would be much appreciated.

After uninstalling a few redundant programs I had about 250mbs, now for some unknown reason I'm down to 30mbs or so over a period of a month or so.

I surf the net on a regular basis, so I guess I am accumulating something thats taking up memory.

Do a de fraq quite often actually. Gain a bit on the memory but not as much as I have "lost"

Clean up your hard drive. (http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/howto-16.html) DiskPie2 (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,11361,00.asp).

Loc-out,

What is the size of the Hard Drive?

How much RAM does your computer have?

Which operation system are you using?

How long since the operating system last was installed?

How long do you leave your computer on before you either turn it off or reboot it?

Take Care,

Richard

P.S. My guess is your pagefile/swapfile is set to dynamically change and uses up the hard drive space over time. We can fix it depending on the answers you give above.

I've got deja vu and memory loss.

I know I've forgotten things before......

OK, being serious for a change. This happened to me a while back on one of the 98 machines. The /WINDOWS/TEMP folder was crammed with gazillions of mysterious files that all seemed to have something to do with ZIP files. Eventually realised that my viruscanner (McAfee) was unpacking zipped files to scan 'em and omitting to delete them afterwards. I took to purging my TEMP folder regularly for a while and then, in the strange way that things happen on M$ OSes, one day it stopped. Maybe the scan engine updated or Windows got it's wits back.

I've learned to ignore irritating but harmless glitches rather than take precipitate action or waste hours trying to track them down because they often rectify themselves after a bit.

Done, thanks for that.

After I emptied out the temp internet files then did a defaq, finished up with 340MBS free space. The old notebook goes a bit faster now also!:O

In Internet Explorer, Tools/Internet Options. Under Temporary Internet Files click Settings. There you can adjust the size of your Temporary Internet Files folder (cache). The default setting is quite high. You can reduce it to something suitable for the size of your drive.

You say you had 200MB of temp internet files. Maybe make your folder about 80MB, that way it won't grow out of control. You can try smaller if you wish.
