You are right, RUDAS, they are flown by pilots, amazing, how did you know that? They operate DC-9. Have 1 aircraft, second to be deliverd in 2 to 3 weeks. Crews all Venezuelo's.....nice guys. Owners are Togolese and Lebanese.

This flying a DC9-32 is fairly recent for STA (9 months?). Before that, they used to operate two or three Let 410s out of BKO, and I think they still do that in parallel with the jet operations.

The boss is a Frenchman, Mr. Sabague, who has a horrendous reputation in the business as far as maintenance, salaries, and overall practices are concerned. From what I heard in March, he was planning on transitionning his own L410 jocks (mostly French) on the DC9 to reduce the expenses, but I don't know what happened with that.

Treetopflyer has the most accurate info about STA, although Sabbague is a Malian born Lebanese holding French citizenship.

The DC9-32 is an Ex-Air Canada (more than 30years old), and so far none of the French pilots on the let410 fleet have been promoted to the DC9.

learr,

STA advertised with Mach2000 a French interim agency for crews.
Some of the Venezuelan pilots have previous flying experience in Africa with Ghana Airways.

I think Sabbague looks at the bottom line and that is why the his faithful French pilots are still waiting...

learr,

These crews are all hired by STA, not via an agency. "The faithful
French pilots" :hmm: will be upgraded when the second airplane comes, that's what I've been told.

josephshankes,

Sobeck has nothing to do with STA, don't know where he is nowadays, but try Kin...

learr,

Don't know the salaries, but will ask a friend who's flying there.

The initial hiring was done via and interim agency, it could be that the venzuelan pilots have negotiated terms of their own once the initial contracts were up for renewal.

As far as the faithful French pilots, i'd be glad to see them move on to the DC-9...

I hope it's a dream come true for some of them after all the years spent in BKO.

I thought the boss at STA is Papso Thiam, ex Managing Director of Air Afrique. Think they may register the second Aircraft in Gambia which would give them credibility since Gambia has pretty high standards. Anyway if they need another aircraft they must be doing OK.

Josephshanks,

not sure but i think they operating the HS748, they lost the caravelle a few years ago!

The Bob guy currently operates a full-cargo YS11 and a VIP Gulfstream I. The HS748 was back in South Africa for a well-deserved refurbishment and he was using a F27 in the meantime to make scheduled flights (dunno the latest situation on the issue). I believe the Caravelle is indeed out of the picture, and the Andover as well. There have been talks about getting a DC9-32, but you know about "talks"...
