Just got back from BKK where I read no less than two adverts in the Bangkok Post looking for pilots. Mins were reasonably low but the kicker was the requirement for Thai nationality.

The burning question for those in the know - when I marry my Thai girlfriend is there a way to obtain the proper paperwork to be eligible for these jobs?

Not sure of the work vise set up, but to give you a clue of how things work down there, If you marry a Thai girl, you are not entitled to any additional land ownership rights due to your marriage. If on the other hand a Thai male marries a farang, then it is OK for here to own freehold!! You could always try marrying a Thai guy, but I am not sure how openminded your girlfriend is.

This gives a bit of a hint...

Every foreigner employed needs to have a work permit before he can work. The company employing you must apply for this. Generally no company with a registered capital under 3,000,000 Baht may employ a foreigner (unless it can be proved that the job he will engage in cannot be done by a Thai). There are no fixed capital rules for obtaining a second foreign work permit within any given company. Applications will be judged individually on the basis of total capital investment and the absence of Thai's who could perform the same roles

Can't say that I'm much interested in marrying a Thai male although by the looks of things in downtown Bangkok it wouldn't be hard to find one.

So, the burning question is whether or not the airlines in question would sponsor someone for a work visa. It does seem odd that they were advertising for Thai nationals in an English language newspaper. I'm sure they have the money - 3 million baht works out to only about $70,000. Even my current Mom 'n' Pop airline has that (I hope). Any guesses anyone?

Thanks for the link on real estate. Just so happens that I'm shopping for that as well.

I have been in Bangkok for three years and flying so you can either accept or ignore the following:

Unless your L1011 qualified for direct entry into any of the three seats, an ATR 72 Captain or B757 qualified - forget it. The Thai Governerment is National Socialist in its approach and therefore the airline industry is protected by stiff labour laws.

The only way is for the sponsoring company to prove that a Thai National can not be found to do the job - eg little response from national advertisements. A good indicator of this practice is that TG never flew L1011's, ATR's are relatively new on the register and the B757 is not yet on the register.

Now....what about marrying a Katoey - I can see the one stop Visa/work permit shop having a field day with that one....:D

FO Cokebottle,

Thanks. That's kind of what I'd suspected. So, you're flying one of those three types?

Saw a Farang at the wheel of a (Lao Airways?) RJ coming out of Luang Prabang a few months ago so I thought there might be hope for me to find a flying job in my beloved SEA.

Went bar-hopping at Nana Plaza a few nights ago and saw a couple of HOT katoeys at that go-go bar on the second floor. Frightening!

Thanks again.

<<ATR's are relatively new on the register>> Time flies. TG received their 1st ATR42-320 way back in July 1990.
