Does anyone know why SAA are dropping this route from 31 October as it always seems to have good load factors?.

Thanks. Interesting comment "due to poor profits" If the load factors are as high as I understood them to be, does this mean the fare is set incorrectly.
Interestingly, Thai Airways are looking to tie up with Kenya to service this route. They too questioned the profitability.

Hi,

ZFT, yes the fare must have been set incorrectly. Anyone know what aircraft operated the route?

Following another thread on the news bulletin that 146 linked:-
The second gift, is a token of our appreciation for his life of hardship, courage and countless achievements, particularly his work for peace and harmony in South Africa and all corners of the globe. From today SAA is offering Mr Mandela and his wife, Mrs Graca Machel, unlimited free first class flights on all destinations served by South African Airways. Sensible publicity, should not cost too much as he would (probably) have had govt level discounts.

The only prob they will have it ensuring that any trip he is on is operated by the A340 that carries his name. Just think of all those pictures of him stepping out of 'his' aircraft. The publicity children must be wetting themselves.

I’ve just had my original question answered by an SAA staff member.

Apparently the high load factors were heavily distorting the true picture, as a significant % of the load was ID90 and ID100 tickets.

Still, it will be sad to no longer see an SAA aircraft at Don Muang

Looks like a good opportunity for Kenya Airways new NBO/BKK/HKG 3 x weekly 767 which has reasonable connections at NBO to /from JNB. They also start CPT/NBO 737-700 nonstops shortly.

Skylion,

TG are, according to local press, already in talks with Kenya Airways re a codeshare on the service just as you described.
