Well wish I was there ... I remember the "grand lady of the sky" from the day it landed many moons ago ... :ok:

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS MUSEUM SOCIETY : CLASSIC FLIGHT B747-244

The South African Airways Museum Society is offering a unique opportunity to fly on a Sunset Cruise aboard their Boeing 747-244, ZS-SAN, "Lebombo".

This soon to be retired venerable airliner of the skies will carry you on a scenic flight over the Hartbeespoort Dam, Sun City, Pretoria and Johannesburg. Departure will be late afternoon enabling you to savour a Highveld sunset and return after dark to the splendid view of twinkling city lights below.

Boeing 747-200's will soon be a thing of the past and this is a golden opportunity to fly on one of the few remaining in South African Airways service. Once retired in December 2003 the aircraft will be flown to Rand Airport, Germiston and put on static display. The SAA Museum Society will relocate its Museum to Rand Airport.

Funds raised from the flight will be used to improve the SAA Museum Society facilities and allow the organisation to continue it efforts in collecting and preserving South Africa's proud civil aviation heritage.

Is Lebombo its affectionate nickname or official name? Where does it come from?

I'd love to go on that trip, I get into Joburg the next day - bummer!!

Cheers

Hi,

Every 747 in the SAA fleet have a name, like in this (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/192869/M/) picture.

Thanks 146

Same as here in Ireland - the Aer Lingus jets have names after saints.

Do the SAA names come from tribal origins/rivers ??

PS they are getting rid of their 146s at the end of the year though!:uhoh:

Hi,

Irishwingz, SAA have names of different South African places on the 747's. An example being, one aircraft has the name "Cape Town" written down one side. On the other side "Kaapstad" is written, which is the Africkaans translation of Cape Town.

This (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/179248/M/) is a picture of ZS-SAU which has the Cape Town/Kaapstad titles.

That's going to be intresting to see it land at Rand.

I'm sure the R/W isn't big enough.

Damn me, thanks Gunns:ok:

She was one of the first 747s I ever flew on. The old girl has been around for a long time now.

Can any of you tell me if the combi ZS-SAR still flying ? I flew it for two years in the early 90s on contract with Garuda Indonesia. I think it was converted to a full freighter on return to SAA.

Thanks

SAR is long gone. Went to the desert years ago. I don't know where she is now.

Went on the Sunset, Sun City flight on Saturday 13th.

A wonderful trip - even if the weather didn't play along and neccesitated a climb to L250 - one or two pax's left their lunch on board...

The brief from the front office and the running commentary from Karl Jensen kept everyone well informed and Karl certainly is a mine of information and facts on the 747 - I wonder why he retired, he never needs to take a breath......!!

Noise was made about another A.B.F.F. flight before retirement - definately gonna try make that one as well - be nice to see the ground this time, but will also make CERTAIN to be at Rand when she lands.

Will not be standing at the clubhouse tho' - just in case the brakes are not so good...... :E

:ok: to the Airways Museum Society and Richard.

I also was fortunate to have a window seat, took some great pics and Vid, any idea when the old bird is going to land at rand.

Was it me or did I hear wrong that no visits were allowed into the flightdeck close to landing, even though it was announced that no flightdeck visits were allowed

Greetings Jeroen

You heard right about the flight deck visits - I queried that with Richard as well - don't think he was in a position to answer tho'

Pity - maybe next time....

She will be landing at Rand sometime in December - not sure of exact date yet, but I'm sure it will be announced as the event of the year...!

The flight was certainly a magic event - much better than "up-sit for 12 hours in a straight line-down"

Last time I had that much fun was in the sharp end of a Virgin A340 over the ocean somewhere (pre 9/11), at midnight.

Will see you for the next one hopefully...
