Denver closed...literally.

All flights to DEN cancelled since Tuesday afternoon due to a fairly severe blizzard. Currently 3 feet of snow on the ground at the airport. All roads impassible. Boulder, 30 miles West of the airport has 52 inches on the ground. And this is within a 24 hour period !!

Part of the canopy on the roof at DIA collapsed necessitating the evacuation of the main terminal. All stranded passengers shipped to Terminal B where food, drink and good humor were in scarce supply.

Snow stopping now, airport could re-open by tomorrow morning.2nd worst storm in Denver history.

Sounds like the skiing in Aspen and Vail might be good until Easter! :D

52 inches? That's just showing off. We can close down half of England with just 2 inches!

I was there a few hours prior to closing down. Spent an hour and a half waiting to be deiced prior to departure. Considering where it is and the wx they get, one would think they would have this down to an art. Wishfull thinking.

According to colleagues who live and work there this is a storm of unusual proportions. We, in the UK, should be ready for 2 inches but we aren't because (we are told) it really doesn't happen THAT often. Similarly, the amounts they've received are such that whilst they should be ready is the investment justified?

It takes a storm of this proportiion to close the airport, however to bring operations to a crawl requires much less. The garden variety winter storm reduces a multi runway facility down to one departure runway. In a 73 we burned nearly 2700 pounds just waiting to go.

Ain't no skiing like in Vail! Beaver creek is my favourite! Highly recommended!!!!
