xenia, I suspect your knowledge of italy is a bit better than mine, but isn't bergamo about the same distance from milan as malpensa, but just on the other side? ie about 28 miles?

Xenia....in the debate of MXP v BGY perhaps I should point out that MXP is 30miles from Milan and BGY is 28miles....not really a massive geographical difference!...infact quite the opposite.

Yes, accepted that it may be easier to get into the centre of Milan from MXP given that it's a larger airport with possibly better transport links, however BGY tends to be favoured as a better route regards winter ski traffic and therefore a better option operationally for Flybe. and certainly for year-round passenger traffic.

Are there enough people wanting to travel to Belfast docks from Southampton? Seems a bit strange when it is already covered by BA(or have they dumped that route too and I missed it?)?.How do Be feel now that Easy ARE going to take them on on the Gatwick route?Tyke any thoughts? Will it be like the arrival of Go at Stansted when they retired from the route rather quickly?

I remember back in 1992 when Loganair first launched EDI and GLA to SOU. I operated on the first day of ops there.

There is a ready market between the naval bases (less now that Rosyth has gone), plus we used to get a lot of Ford traffic (there is a Ford factory just off the end of the runway), as well as railways folk.

Even charging high prices, the flights were usually full. However, Loganair (later Manx/BA Regional/BACX etc) never exploited the potential of the route. It is actually a very, very good feeder for SW London, and the connections to LHR/LGW were good even then. Add to that, there is a main line railway station just outside the terminal door, you can get to central London in 40 mins or so.

We found that most pax had no idea we were flying into there, most only found out by accident- a function of BA influence over travel agents at the time. We should have a much better exposure using the internet.

Also, SOU is unavailable to the main low-cost carriers, so we have little competition. Bournemouth is another 40 mins down the road, has no rail link and poor transport connections.

The only slight worry is that I seem to remember us saying the LCY would be a major expansion for us... :( :( :(

Miles or no miles ... The city of Milan, as big as it can be is Milan ... Bergamo is another city ... that is my point.
Bergamo has nothing to do with Milan, and actually that was what I was on about.
Bergamo Airport is actually called Bergamo Orio al Serio. There's no Milan going around it at all....
It is a bit like Ryan Air that calls Treviso.... Venice!! Treviso is Treviso and Venice is Venice ... even if 20 miles apart they are 2 different cities. Please call our wonderful Italians towns with their own names!!!
In the other hand Brighton isn't London, Liverpool isn't Manchester and Coventry isn't Birmingham.

xenia, now I understand what you were getting at I tend to agree with you, on both points...in particular about your beautiful cities which are my personal favourites in the world to visit. I for one am looking forward to us operating schedules down there, and hope and expect that more will follow shortly behind.

Don't think introducing a SOU-GLA would be a good move, especially when Ryanair are flying from BOH-only 40 minutes from SOU- to Glasgow Prestwick from Feb. Buzz withdrew services within 3 hours of FR's anouncement!!

Hi
How big is the range on the BAe 146s that will be operating some of these routes?
How far south could these 'planes go in terms of Spain/Italy?
Can SOU's runway handle 737s?
Nevertheless, it's great news for SOU to be getting some new and interesting routes, and to see flybe. expanding.
I hope we'll be seeing some of these new interesting routes from my locals NCL/BHX

Could be interesting with a wet or hot runway.

The flightline 146 always used to divert to Bournemouth
in either hot or cold weather.

SOU is licenced up to 757 size, and in the Summer (well, last Summer anyway) saw Britannia 75's, Air Europa and Air Malta 73,s (all the way up to -800) and Iberworld 320's. Spanair 320's are operating to TFS (albeit via outbound techstop in Nantes) during the Winter.

With regard to 146 performance (payload/range) off the SOU runway, I guess Rawdata is best qualified to comment.

The schedules due for operation in the New Year are currently planned for the Dash Q400. I would imagine that if successful the 146 may be deployed on certain rotations on certain routes at a later stage.

The 146 can get from GCI-AGP (Guernsey-Malaga)with a full pax load so it would be my belief that the intended destinations would be fine for the 146.

In days of old, JY used to do BHX-IBZ in a 146. They've been seen regularly in ALC/FAO/PMI on charters. Cityjet used to fly BFS-FAO albeit with restricted payload.
