Turnover 2,56 Milliarden Euro (-60 % over 2020) and a loss of 1,05 Milliarden Euro, reported in Frankfurt on Thursday.. Positive notes were a profit of € 314 million from Lufthansa Cargo and € 16 million from Lufthansa Technik.

Very disappointing to note the announcement today confirming the total closure of LUFTHANSA CITYLINE with immediate effect. The entire fleet of CRJ-900LR's is grounded and withdrawn from service. A number of destinations face closure or reduction of Lufthansa Group scheduled services. The company cites the ongoing labour dispute with staff and fuel price increases related to the war in Iran as factors which gave rise to the decision. I hope that all the staff affected are either transferred to Lufthansa City (another carrier within the group) or accommodated elsewhere across the group brands. But some redundancies would seem likely?

The closure of CityLine (in 2027) had been announced years before. The immediate stop was new. It looks like a reaction to this week's official 100 years festivities affected by labor disputes going on.

Lufthansa have a long history of trying to shut out or kill off competition by setting up subsidiaries in non core sectors and it seems to me that while they have been successful to keep home grown competition in check, or in the case of Air Berlin expediting their self inflicted demise, they haven't been entirely successful financially.

Perhaps they should have followed BA's lead in playing to their strengths (FRA and MUC) and feeding full service business through those hubs, leaving independents and leisure carrier to fight over the many, quite substantial regional airports.

The strength and militancy of the Cockpit and Verdi unions cannot help either.

Lufthansa is moving former core business to subsidiaries. Like Discover, City, Eurowings and foreign partner airlines and their hubs. They seem to focus on long range flights and non-german markets leaving some former domestic feeder services to private cars and trains. It looks like many german non-hub airports are quite underserved.

Although LH announced CityLine's "immediate" closure on April 18, I noticed a CityLine A319 pushing back from LH's usual stand at MAN yesterday evening. (German Railways are also less efficient in timings these days).

LH schedules have been decimated at BHX pretty much overnight. From 3 x daily FRA to 1, Much from 2 x daily to virtually disappeared can only find a patchy schedule of 2 weekly, mostly Mon and Thurs. It's quite a shock, they have been such familiar sights at BHX throughout the day.

Neither schedule is very conducive for travel to either city or onward connections.

Ironic considering they had just released a glowing press release about 40 years of operations at BHX. The FRA service is right back down to that 40 year ago starting schedule.

MUC was already operated by the 'new' Lufthansa City so I'm not sure why the route has virtually disappeared? FRA was mainly mainline with Air Dolomiti operating the evening service of late.

Hopefully easyJet will take a look at MUC as it has always loaded very well from BHX

At NCL, FRA has reduced from daily to 5 weekly. Both flights operated by Cityline have been dropped. The other five flights became mainline from the start of the summer season, so although frequency is down the number of available seats will be up.

I wonder how flights from GLA and EDI have been affected? MAN seemingly hasn't been affected implying that BHX can't have been performing but no idea why given that schedules hasn't changed much on either route for many years (although we did lose the MUC night stopper a while ago)

What would a 2/3 x weekly Easyjet service bring to the table? Pretty useless for business travel and no connection opportunities. All they would serve is leisure the leisure sector.

BHX/MUC must exist primarily to serve the LH hub, when or perhaps if LH restore frequency on the route much goodwill and business will they have lost, and how long might it take to restore it. Over the past few years the combined efforts of Lufthansa management, Verdi and Cockpit have made the airline a less reliable option for long haul connecting passengers as they appear to suffer interminable "warnstreiks" that screw up passengers plans. Crikey, these days Air France are probably more reliable.

We flew out to BCN, via FRA, with LH from BHX the Thursday before last. The 10.15 am flight was full, I think, and Business (4 rows from memory) was also more or less full. Our return flights were cancelled by LH and they rebooked us via AMS, on KLM. That Business Class offering was probably about 60-70% full; economy was packed then too. Obviously this is anecdotal, and I accept LH had withdrawn the lunchtime FRA flight, but the heavily loaded mid-week flight might suggest they were doing pretty well at BHX. I suspect it's probably more to do with it simply being a consequence of them closing Cityline very quickly without having the equipment to backfill the routes at short notice at the previous frequency, rather than any great desire to downgrade the route permanently. I guess we'll see in the fullness of time. I entirely take the point, though, that such limited frequencies now on offer will surely deter bookings which might do longer-term damage to both FRA and MUC.

Group capacity decreases by less than one percent in available seat kilometers (ASK) through the cancellation of unprofitable routes in Frankfurt and Munich, while simultaneously expanding existing routes in Zurich, Vienna and Brussels
With the cancellation of routes from Frankfurt to Bydgoszcz and Rzeszów (Poland) as well as Stavanger (Norway), at least three destinations have been temporarily removed from the current flight schedule. Ten connections are being consolidated within the Group via other hubs: HDF, ORK, GDN, LJU, RJK, SBZ, STR, TRD, TIV and WRO.

So I see that Lufthansa have now restored Frankfurt-Cork as a mainline route after it was cancelled along with the other Cityline routes. Have any other routes seen this change?

Yep BHX but only for June at the moment. BHX was originally 1 x LH on the A320 and 2 x Cityline on Frankfurt and is now all Airbus for the period 1/6/26-30/6/26. In July and the rest of summer all 3 flight remain bookable but two flights still branded Cityline (Cork the same I believe) and I would hope this is a positive in as much that at least two flights if not all three will operate. The fares are not set too high to put off bookings which is usually another good sign. Munich is virtually back to daily in June, all Lufthansa (Not LH City)

LH Group orders 10 more A359 and 10 B789 but "the decision regarding which airline and which hub the ordered aircraft will be deployed at will be made at a later date".
