The board of the Cork Airport Authority (CAA) are due to have a top level meeting with Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, in Cork tomorrow, Tuesday. The meeting had been set to take place last Thursday in Minister Cullen's Waterford constituency but that arrangement was called off. Probably a wise move in the circumstances as it is unlikely that the board of the Dublin Airport Authority would be hauled down to Waterford for a meeting?

Let us hope there is progress.

Was seeing someone else off on Friday evening from Cork. Around 7 pm the main restaurant was closed so all the available tea/coffee & grub sales were being conducted from the Coffee Cuisine shop. The place was jammed with outbound flights to FR Gatwick, RE Edinburgh, EI Heathrow, WW Manchester & Birmingham, RE Dublin, EZY Gatwick and Ryanair Stansted and the queue for the coffee shop for service extended well back towards the main restaurant. It is a disgrace that obviously hungry passengers are not provided for with the full restaurant facility on such a busy night. Remember, this is the kind of rubbish service you are paying for in your airport taxes and charges. Come on, get the small things right first, otherwise pax will be lost.

Just an update for the record. The CAA are due to meet Minister Cullen this evening in Dublin. Hope it is more than just hot air!

It seems there was a positive result of sorts after Cork Airport Authority's sub committe meeting with Transport Minister Cullen last Tuesday. A new company of consultants have been appointed to negotiate between the Cork authority and the Dublin authority over the 160 million euro debt for the new Cork Airport termial due to open on 10th May. A London company called Aviation Economics has taken over the task replacing the DAA appointed BDO Simpson Xavier whom recently refused to meet with the Cork sub committee.

Cork based Enterprise Minister, Micheal Martin, who attended the meeting along with Minister Cullen said the debt situation could now be solved within the next four weeks before the new terminal opens. That is the hope anyway! Minister Cullen wanted it made clear that it was not the Government's intention to undermine the commercial future of Cork Airport.

Guess this is progress and must be welcomed. Meanwhile, the top hats of the new board have been more active in the media of late being quoted in the newspapers and radio at events like the publicity launch of the new EI ORK-SXF and how busy the Easter period will be at the airport.

In other news, Malev flew in a 737-800 last night so guess there was a heavy load out this morning to Budapest for the Easter weekend. Cork had a transatlantic visitor late last night landing shortly after the Malev. A new PA-28 arrived in off the ocean on a delivery flight! It is not often that Cork gets one of those long transatlantic flights but you got to start somewhere!

I did find it curious that Fingal Co Council gave the okay for a new 12,000 foot runway at Dublin a day or so after the ministerial meeting about Cork. Just goes to prove what the agenda is for the DAA with Cork being way down below the horizon.

Please forgive another brief update. There was not one but two GA transatlantic delivery flights through Cork last night. The first was as noted above a PA-28 of some variant and the second aircraft which arrived just a litte later was a Cessna 206. If Cork Airport is not too careful she could end up getting a reputation for being a transatlantic gateway!

Might be a sign!? ;)

This morning's Irish Examiner reports that the May 10th opening of the new terminal at Cork is unlikely to be met. On the positive side an announcement is expected from Wizzair on new routes out of Cork later this week according to the same report. This would be the first low cost continental carrier to operate out of Cork.

Bout time! I presume Wizz saw EI comming in and wiping up all the market, and at a pretty decent yield too! It was only a matter of time before an eastern european lo-co came to Cork, as the region has one of teh highest immigration rates from the acession countries in the EU.

Hopefully things are getting back on track up there, now that the terminal is almost open!

I don't know too much about Wizzair, but I wonder where they're considering. Their bases seem to be Warsaw, Gdansk, Katowice and Budapest.

Two of those four already have services from Cork. Are they the type of airline who'd be put off going head to head with an established carrier?

I'd say Katowice is most likely. It's in quite a densely populated region, there are no services from existing carriers and it could attract a certain amount of outbound from Cork because of its proximity to Krakow.

Wroclaw or Gdansk woudl be nice as I've already been to Warsaw, Katowice and Krakow :)

Good to see something positive coming out of it. Will be interesting to see what they have negotiated in terms of landing fee's etc etc.
Would they have pulled off a ryanair/shannon type deal?

The fact that the press conference is been held in Cork and that it has been signalled as a significant announcement suggests that it may be more than just a 3 per week service to Gdansk or Katowice. Time will tell.

Looking forward to Friday's press conference in Cork from Wizz. What a coup for Cork if the news is good and that there will be new routes from the east to Cork! About time too bearing in mind the many folk from Poland that are now living and working in the Cork area contributing to the local and national economy. Bring it on for Friday!

Cork had some unusual visitors yesterday afternoon. A brief visit for fuel in the shape of not one but two Royal Navy Sea Kings! The aircraft then positioned to Collins Barracks on Cork's north side and are still there. Must have some war games planned with the Irish Defence Forces.

Easter Week too! Wonder will Corporal O'Dee be calling down from Limerick for a look or will he be too busy minding the Israeli or is it Venezuelan helicopters on the An-124s at the arms bazaar in Shannon!?

Apparently it was in todays examiner that it is going to be Katowice (krakow, but let me tell u, it is a nice bit form Krakow!!) and Gdansk.

No info on frequency etc.

Yes, Powerjet1, thank you. Departures ex Cork on Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays from 14th July, 2006. Times are either at 0120 for the Tuesdays and Thursdays and at 0140 hours on the Saturdays.

This new route is very welcome for Cork Airport and should do just fine. If anything I see it as complementing the Aer Lingus service to Warsaw. Whilst I am just a tad disappointed not to see the hoped for Gdansk service there can be little doubt that the new flight to Katowice will be a success.

It is notable how the eastern European airlines and especially the locos are happy to schedule some of their new flights as red-eyes to maximise airframe utilisation like is all ready being done with the Central Wings flights from Warsaw to snn. What a turnaround for low cost air transport! Is it not remarkable to now see so many flights between Ireland and Poland? Aer Lingus, LOT, Ryanair, Central Wings and now Wizz Air. Just goes to prove how substantial the market is now for Polish people wanting to come and work amongst us here in Ireland.

Long may it continue as it is great for our economy!
