Biggest difference in plane size on same route?
Just looking at flights from Bangkok to Phuket, and I see a 747 and a Jetstream 31 being used on the same sector.
One must be 10x the size of the other - is that the biggest difference between aircraft sizes on any one route? Looking at the distance, and frequency of service, I am surprised that either is economic to operate - isn't this more 737 type territory? |
I suspect you'll find the 747 is on the domestic leg of an international operation, e.g. Japan-Bangkok-Phuket or Europe-Bangkok-Phuket, so carrying long-haul and stopover pax. Agree with you about the J31 economics, though...

I suspect the size difference is a little more than 10x.. The J31 only carries about 17 pax...... though I see your point!! A bit odd.

Phuket 744s
Evenings South bound TG 221 Bangkok > Phuket
North bound TG 920 Phuket > Bangkok > Frankfurt Also TG 980 Sydney > Melbourne > Phuket > Bangkok interesting this one, if you change planes in Phuket you can get to Bkk 10 minutes quicker! Presume the 744 a bit thirsty and also all pax have to clear immigration and reboard. Only time I've got in seat 1b was Phuket > Bangkok. Route was Sin-Hkt-Bkk with no first class, so asked for seats 1a & 1b. Ps I just told a lie, I've also had 1a in a J31, it ain't even a half as comfortable, even for the half that was on the seat. |
I think you will find plenty of 747 flights between PTP & FDF in the Cariibean. They will be part of a CDG-FDF-PTP-CDG (or vv.) loop, mostly by a tour outfit like Corsair.
The normal service between PTP and FDF will be by ATR 42/72, with a couple of A320 each day. Distance is 200 km./120 mi. |
