Baby grows again
 
Following the speculation about baby and Cardiff, it seems that growth is back on the cards. New route to PRG (4x weekly) and Milan reinstated, along with an extra Geneva (already announced). And EMA is getting a winter Milan service as well.

Great. Cardiff - Prague will REALLY help my beer addiction! Thanks Tony! :ok: ;)

bmibaby are launching services to Barcelona and Prague from MAN on October 1st. Also Cork will go from once to twice daily on October 1st.

Good news indeed for CWL and Baby. I also give the CWL management full marks for its publicity machine.

Whenever a new route commences at CWL the main evening newspaper for the West Country, the Bristol Evening Post, will carry an article publicising it, pointing out that West Country travellers now have more choice, even when the route is already flown from BRS, as with Prague. Today’s edition of the Post carried full details of the new bmibaby service.

It has to be said that the Post does have something of a vendetta against BRS, mainly because of its car parking policy and charges, but also because it believes that the city of Bristol should have a much bigger and better airport, and anything much less than Heathrow size is a black mark against the city. It will therefore highlight anything that might give the impression that other cities are better served by their airports.

And you would be surprised how many local people believe that Bristol is poorly served when in fact, for a city of its size and catchment area, the services are pretty good. Only last year the presenter of the BBC Radio Bristol morning phone-in programme commented, when airports were being discussed, “Of course they have wonderful air services at Cardiff. Much better than Bristol.”

Anyway, I think the Baby can expect some trade for Prague from this side of the Severn, due not a little to the Bristol Evening Post.

Re the baby service to Geneva, given that the first aircraft is now full, and so early in the year, I wonder why baby doesn’t try a daily service or perhaps a 4/5 rotations per week, for the ski season at least. There is no easyJet service to GVA from BRS, although I did read somewhere recently that the route might be serviced by a Geneva-based easy aircraft. Whether this was pie-in-the-sky or wishful thinking, or whether it has a grain of truth, I have no way of knowing.

no disrispect but don't you mean cardiff and east midland airport,
nottingham has an airport and it's in the way of a grass field, where I am sure you will find robin hood and his band of merry men somewhere in a nearby tree.

I flew from MUC to CWL last week and there was an EMA flight checking in at the same time at adjacent check-in desks....the sign above the desks read 'Nottingham' as did the entry on the main departures screen in the terminal.............hmmmmm :hmm:

A big campaign against this in the Derby papers.... but yes.... IATA airport coding - supported by Tiny Tony - has EMA as the airport, but with the city link of Nottigham. Apparently, the shoe men in Leicester aren't too happy either!!!

Interesting reading looking at the figure for Manchester to Belfast (both City and Aldergrove) since Baby came on line.

The CAA figures show that 12,092 passenger flew to Aldergrove in May. If my calculations are correct - Baby I think fly 3 times on weekdays, once on a Saturday and twice on Sundays - then that gives an average of 172 passenger per flight on a 737-300.

One would have assumed that Baby would have hit BA, but the City route had an increase of 12pc to 13,040 over the same period.

It's good to see that competition appears to have proved benificial to all, Incidently the easyJet service from Liverpool was down by 4pc in the same periodwhich is not bad considering the gains at Manchester.

ps - I assume that the figures quoted are on a round trip basis as statistics are only given ex the lower alphabetical airport on any route.

er not sure about your arithmetic.

I make it that 3 x weekdays, 2 x Sundays and 1 x Saturdays makes:

126 + 20 + 8 = 154 flights (one-way) which gives:




12092/154 = 78.5 pax per flight....


(ps as you'll see later this was based on June rather than May!!!)

May weekdays = 22 *3 services = 66
May Saturdays = 5 *1 service = 5
May Sundays = 4 *2 services = 8
total = 79
total return flights = 158

Total pax 12092 / 158 = 76 pax per flight

Your quite right - well nearly, since we are talking 2003!

That means 3 x weekdays = 66, 5 x Saturdays = 5 and 4 x Sundays = 8 and gives a total of 79 one-ways flights or 158 returns and an average load of 76.

I did think that 172 was a very high figure - thanks for correcting me, I can only put it down to the unusually high summer temperatures we have at the moment. Well the railways blame anything on unusual events, so why shouldn't we!!

I still am suprised that BA were not more effected then they have been - yes, we are only looking at one months figures I know.
