Newcastle on the up! At last

Well you can probably tell I have a passion for NCL as I don't often get up there, working down south.

Things are starting to look up for the northeasts major airport, only months ago it looked like a ghost town. Firstly easyJet are opening a base, with long awaited for low cost services to european destinations. Next summer the airport is set to be packed. Already Britannia are to base 757 and 767 aircraft and Excel and MD airlines are set to have crew based there for the first time, in addition to the normal charters - MYT/SCY/JMC. KLM have increased AMS to 7 daily and FlyBe are adding a scheduled JER service, twice on saturdays. Lets hope the rumours of BA are not true and the sound of BACE jets would be great!

New destinations are being added in the dozens - all great for the great geordie race!

On the down side Norwegian are stopping their SVG service, though I'm sure Wideroe will click on to that.

Any fellow northeners still up please keep me updated on the NCL scene. :) :D

Yes all very good etc, but what about these ba rumours? I'm not wanting to duplicate the other thread on reporting points, just sticking to BA potential or retraction ex newcastle? Also BE future with regards to Af?

Go-arounder 30th Nov 2002 17:52

Yes things are on the up!
New IT's to Pisa, Rimini, Chania, Pelion, Corsica and a third Bulgaria a week!
Easy announcing the routes next week with rumours of other operators waiting in the wings??
The FlyBe Jersey was that daily and twice on Sat or just the extra Saturday flight?

Great stuff

P. S. At present count 24 night stoppers next year could be a squash!

transwede 30th Nov 2002 19:54

Good job the airport is building an extra apron, will need it to accommodate 24 night-stoppers. The BE JER is just an extra saturday service, in addition to the existing one. BE are actually building up a sizeable operation ex-NCL with 10 charters a week planned in addition to the scheduled services.

Whats this about BE and AF? Of course theres a future! And if some rumours are to be believed BA are in NCL to stay, with dare I even mention it, an RJ100 to operate BRU onbehalf of SN Brussels. Easy routes are looking like AMS, PMI and BCN?

carlos vandango 30th Nov 2002 22:40

I heard this week that EZY had postponed their NCL base. True or false?

Go-arounder 1st Dec 2002 10:06

Carlos – False from what I‘ve seen, you can’t turn a corner up here with out seeing a big orange 737 looking down at ya. Must have a large advertising budget!

carlos vandango 1st Dec 2002 20:10

Hmm, perhaps they're just not opening the crew base so soon, but still doing the routes. Wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

Go-arounder 3rd Dec 2002 14:40

I see from the other thread that Easy have applied to operate charter flights!
Any thing to do with Newcastle?

KLM fod 4th Dec 2002 23:56

Great news on the expansion out of NCL - especially the EZY base. This should be a massive boost to everyone there in terms of the year-round operations.

When I worked on the NCL ramp, the summer period was so manic with many different operators. However the winter was dead and the workforce had to be cut by 2 thirds. This should redress the balance and serve the demand that there is in the North East ( so proved by the succesful GO services to STN ).

On a lower note, though: where are they gonna put all the passengers? I know the new apron has been built, but the coaching gates at NCL are tiny and could just about cope with the few flights that were forced to park out there during the busier periods. NCL is a small but well arranged airport and I just hope this new success is met with new investment.

transwede 5th Dec 2002 19:23

The airport authority at NCL are currently looking at plans to increase space within the terminal. This follows the new regulations that arriving and departing passengers must be segregated at all points. The Domestic departures area has now been closed, so who knows whats planned for that space.

The real problem the airport are having is where all the flights are going to checkin, especially at weekends when on a saturday alone 30+ charter flights are planned, not to mention scheduled flights and the new easyjet operation!

Flight wise, there are rumours of new operations starting. Lufthansa are happy with the DUS service and are looking at increasing it, not to mention new winter and summer sun destinations!

How long ago were you at Newcastle?
The new ish! 27million pound terminal extension, which has been operating two years now, alone has an 27 extra check in desks. The final work on the pier segregation is going on now and the other planned terminal work including combining the Int/dom security is for extra shops i.e. revenue makers!
The terminal has been rated for 5 million pax – p/a that is.
I agree a second pier could be of use and aircraft parking may be a little tight this summer. But we will see!

easyJet routes?

So, when are easyjet gonna announce the NCL routes then?

Go-arounder 9th Dec 2002 13:47

See Easy are advertising for Newcastle bases pilots in this weeks flight.
Open nights at the Stansted Hilton 16th Dec 0900 -1700 and the Newcastle Metro Centre Marriott 17th Dec 1400 – 1900.
Announcement on the routes some time this week I believe.
:)

Easy routes?

Still waiting.....................

RE at Newcastle

When will Aer Arrann announce there flights into NCL. according to OAG they start 2 daily on January 6th...Will it work out with competition from BACX?

johnwalton 16th Dec 2002 16:03

Who knows. I was thinking it was an OAG misprint. The Aer Arann aircraft will prbably come from the closure of their Shannon - Dublin service.

Wideroe have increased their SVG service on Sundays from one to two. Hopefully they will expand there weekday services as well.

The CBI today said that Newcastle should be expanded to compete with Manchester. Just heard a report about it on the radio. A spokesman said that if it were to happen connection times would be less, flights would be cheaper, business such as Nissan would benefit, and the airport would further enhance tourism in the North East (along with capital of culture etc.)

Great News! :)

[Edit] Just read on Ceefax that there are plans to extend the runway, increase passenger numbers from 3m to 10m, and double workforce to 6,000 within 10 years. The plans have been submitted for government approval. [/edit]

I think an Easy base at Newcastle will hurt Liverpool more than Manchester. Heard the same CBI announcement, they also urge the government to expand Liverpool and Bristol. I think they even proposed a second runway for LPL.
Wonder what they know that we don't?:)

Ringwayman 17th Dec 2002 09:41

BA are to drop these services;
Aberdeen, Birmingham, Dublin, Southampton

But Eastern Airways are to introduce these (they are getting all 12 J41s from BACX):
Aberdeen, Birmingham, Southampton.

GrahamK 17th Dec 2002 10:39

Aer Arran confirmed on the DUB run. Initially 2 x Daily ATR42s, rising to 3 x Daily (2 x ATR72, 1 x ATR42) in May.

richardhall99 17th Dec 2002 10:44

T3 at NCL

At last we will get some more variety up here instead of the boring BA. Will T3 have check in here because at MME I led to believe you check in with BMI.

At last the announcement that RE are flying from Newcastle....the times for departure dont look to good..hopefully they will get some more aircraft and we will have one based here.

When EZY start will we get an earlier flight to STN...so surely on of these based aircraft will fly the early rotation to London.
