bmi baby

BBC news has a quote from Tony Davis - MD of bmi baby that a third UK base is about to be opened. Anyone know where ?

acbus1 22nd Aug 2002 20:53

Perhaps you should ask a current baby pilot,he/she may have received a relocation letter!
How much relocation assistance do they get again?

fokker70 22nd Aug 2002 21:30

My Vote goes to LBA or MME - any other views - Obvious ones really...I do believe that CWL is a big mistake but time will tell. :)

Check the CWL website and you will discover that Baby sold 10,000 tickets in the first 7 days.

Still think it a big mistake?

Maybe were talking two different subjects.
Some of us think the mistake would be made by any pilot basing himself there.
Time will tell but who wants to take the risk when you dont need to?

Then again maybe the 10000 tickets are just the first refugees .

its about time NCL had a decent LCC,

but cant see BMIBaby going there they might move to teesside

Amazon man 23rd Aug 2002 08:42

There have been increasing rumours that it might be Southampton.

This airport is crying out for regular schedules into Europe.

expedite_climb 23rd Aug 2002 08:49

Southampton

The runway is just toooo short...

Amazon man 23rd Aug 2002 09:01

I beg to differ we regularly have all models of 737 flying in and out to points in Spain and Brittania operate their 757's into Southampton as well, although i guess its performance greatly exceeds that of a 737.

GrahamK 23rd Aug 2002 10:00

The new Flight International Mag states that NCL airport will announce a based lo-cost airline by the end of the year. Two Airlines mentioned are BMI Baby and MyTravel Lite .

fokker70 23rd Aug 2002 12:00

Two things - 10,000 seats might sound like a lot but it equates to 5 days of flying - do the numbers....CWL will be a short term thing...just wait and see , I would not re - locate to CWL.

Amazon Man have a look at the SOU runway length, diversions and lack of Navaids. No way a low cost can operate there. Re the very limited 73 operation you will find that most are foreign registered - different rules than British registered ones...Some aircraft have to either stop for fuel en route (costly) or leave empty seats (Costly) SOU hasn't a chance of attracting a low cost operator. EMB operation is about the size of it.:D

VIKING9 23rd Aug 2002 12:21

Do BMi look after the day to day ops and crewing functions for BMibaby or do they have their own dedicated people ?

BryanC123 23rd Aug 2002 13:11

V9

BMI baby is kept totally seperate from BMI. In the case of the new base. It would make sense to have it in the north. LBA is my best bet as its close to MAN and LPL.

Its anyones guess, out of all the rumours for the second base i never heard CWL mentioned once so maybe they will surprise us again. I wouldnt be surprised if they put it at LBA and pulled BMIR from LBA and make that all BMI baby.

Electric Sky 23rd Aug 2002 13:51

baby is not seperate from mainline bmi and is run by the same operations and crewing. The only seperate bits are the crews as some are dedicated bmibaby pilots. However, it is not uncommon to see mainline crews operating some of the baby flying.

ES ;)

Everywhere's a possibility:

From the today's Glasgow Evening News

"Glasgow bids for airline's new base

BOSSES at Glasgow Airport are in talks to bring new budget airline bmibaby north of the border.
The airline, part of the British Midland group, is looking for another UK site after setting up bases at East Midlands and Cardiff airports.

By next year it wants to have a third base and would consider one in the central belt.

BAA Scottish Airports has been in talks with the group and hopes to be involved in any tendering process.

A new low-cost airline would open up the skies for travellers and would offer more direct flights to Europe.

Bmibaby flies to several European destinations - including Milan, Geneva, Barcelona, Prague and Munich, which are not available direct from any carrier in Scotland.

A Glasgow spokeswoman said: "We are in talks with a number of airlines, including bmibaby, as we want to bring in more business and offer more choice.

"We certainly hope bmibaby has Glasgow on its radar screen."

Bmibaby will be inviting several airports to tender and will start choosing a base soon.

Prestwick Airport, owned by a consortium which includes Omniport, is also keen on luring bmibaby but is not believed to be involved in talks with the airline."

There is not much low-cost competition in Scotland except Ryanair, who obviously don't fly to the same destinations as bmibaby would.

Mind you, as BryanC123 says, A lot of people never heard CWL mentioned as a possibility last time so I suppose it could be anywhere - expect an announcement that it'll be at Inverness in a couple of months :D

BryanC123 23rd Aug 2002 17:50

NEF - my cash is on ORKNEY or maybe SHETLAND:D  :D

acbus1 23rd Aug 2002 19:54

17 posts later and still no idea!
How many posts more before we work it out then?
I know, lets simply wait until the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT then we'll know for real!
Yawn.

BryanC123 23rd Aug 2002 21:44

acbus if we waited for an announcement before we posted anything then there would be no site as half the time the airlines dont even have a clue what they are going to do........

HOODED 23rd Aug 2002 22:22

I doubt it will be LBA with BMIR having a strong hold there, my money would be on a Scottish base to make a base in all 3 mainland contries. Glasgow do seem to be trying to attract Baby but with MyTravel lite at Prestwick who knows! Maybe EDI would be a good choice.
