Foggia

Small airport in Italy, a bit north of Bari - wonder if anyone can provide info

I understand a runway expansion from 1440m to 2000m is proposed so the region will no longer be dependent on Bari. If this extension really happening with sufficient cash, or is it just being reviewed by one or more committes while local politicians make noise ? Have any credible airlines shown interest beyond just being polite ?

Why does Alidaunia fly (expensive) helicopters to Vieste (2h40 by bus) and offshore Tremiti island ? I can't find record of a PSO subsidy. Passenger numbers seem to be declining fast. High season fares (15Jun-15Sep) look ok, but low season fares seem very low. Is there maybe some cargo contract involved or another reason ? Are these routes still profitable ?

Would be keen to understand more about Foggia and its passenger routes from someone with knowledge beyond a Google search

I do recall that BIA had a summer charter series there from LGW back in late 80's or early 90's for an Italian tour operator. (Using BAC 1-11's)

A runway extension has been discussed ever since Alitalia/ATI scrapped flights in 1975...

They became so desperate that they founded their own small regional airline, Federico II Airways, in 1998 (which quickly folded). No scheduled serivces since 2011.
