What kind of air service would suit remote Tristan da Cunha Island?
Population under 300, takes about a week to get there by ship, from Cape Town, that service too has ended, doubt it needs a regular airline or airport, would just a semi paved air strip next to the vacant land near the only inhabited area there work for a C-130 operating for cargo and passengers? even the military could do it, dosent have to be a private affair.

Ships still go to Tristan da Cunha so your information I suggest is incorrect. As for an airstrip being built the cost I believe would be prohibitive.
I'd love to go there but alas have only managed St Helena So far. |
TDC has a pop. of about 250 with expats or so. There are no plans for an airport on Tristan Da Cuhna.
I am unsure people there would want an airport and see much more visitors coming. Some of the expats seem desperate for outside company, the islanders not so much. They are friendly though, mind you. It would lose a lot of its special appeal |
You are right about the ship link, I thought St. Helena was the only one serving it.
Population at November Tristan da Cunha Families: Population Update How long a runway does a C-130 need, cant it land on an unpaved air strip? |
What about a seaplane, Wouldnt need to worry about a runway?
|
Build an airstrip on the only flat land on the island and you’ve built on the only agricultural land. Seas would be challenging for a seaplane. I don’t think there’s any helicopter with the range. For the population, I doubt the cost could be justified. Had as anyone asked the population if they want an airstrip? |
No agriculture on the right, though it does seem to be sloping.

Having been to Tristan da Cunha myself I can assure everyone that there is absolutely no chance of building any sort of airstrip on the remote island which is one of the remotest islands on the planet. The islands are more or less covered in cloud for the majority of the year and the sea conditions would definitely prohibit any sort of sea plane service. The island is served on a very irregular basis by a small cargo vessel (3 times a year) since the withdrawal of the RMS St Helena. There are only about 250 residents on the island (mostly inbred) and the cost of such a strip would be very costly indeed especially considering that there is no available or suitable land on the island to actually build one. For those proposing this idea and especially to the OP I think that you would actually need to visit the island to appreciate the situation. On St Helena they had to take away half a hill to build the airport and even that has caused issues. So in short I'm afraid this is an absolutely no go. |
Ok thanks for explaining, wondering what do they do with their garbage.

Things such as oil drums, etc are stored and loaded on the irregular ship visits ready for transportation back to the mainland. Life on somewhere such as the island of Tristan da Cunha is like living in a different century. When I was on Tristan da Cunha we were advised not to have or at least any contact with the locals in case we gave them any ailments that could easily eradicate the population. |
OK this right out there in blue sky thinking. How about a decommissioned aircraft carrier anchored of Tristan? I’ll get me coat!!! |
Tristan gets rather more than the 3 ships a year previously mentioned.
The schedule here Tristan da Cunha Shipping Schedules more than covers the limited traffic to and from the island. |

Obviously that's a totally ridiculous suggestion and I hope that it was meant as a humorous comment but if it wasn't and that your suggestion was meant as a serious one I suggest that you not only get your coat but also your scarf, hat, gloves and car keys and head off to to a place called reality :-) Is that a definite no then? |

Is that a definite no then? I don't know if you have read all of this thread if you had done so you would have read that I have actually been to Tristan da Cunha and I can assure you that your idea is not realistic whatsoever. Is the UK Government really going to fork out money for a redundant aircraft carrier. Where would this hypothetical aircraft carrier come from. The costs of maintaining this hypothetical aircraft carrier. The costs of staffing this hypothetical aircraft carrier. For the amount of flights would it be realistic. The waters around the island can be extremely rough. The waters around the island are extremely deep especially for anchoring, there is no harbour just a very small breakwater. The island has extremely bad weather throughout the year and the sea conditions are not good for the majority of the year along with extreme cloud cover. No alternative landing strip in case of an emergency. Fuel supplies for the aircraft would have to be thought of. The list can go and on so hopefully this whole idea whether it's intended to be humorous or not should be put to bed immediately. I remember on my one and only visit to Tristan da Cunha the seas were rough and the visibility was absolutely awful, the idea of using a redundant aircraft carrier as a landing strip sounds very unrealistic and to be very honest not very mature thinking, quite laughable to be honest with you. From your previous posts on Pprune you come across as a fairly mature person so hopefully your comments regarding this particular topic are just made in jest and not intended to be taken seriously, I honestly hope not. |

Someone's got a handle on this irony business then!
You usually find that some people write something which they assume as being a serious and honest question and then when there either shot down or are proven otherwise their response is that the comments were made in jest and were not intended to be really taken seriously in the first place and laugh it off because they can't accept the fact that their original comments were ridiculous. It happens a lot not just here but everywhere, my brother comes out with the most stupid things sometimes and when he's caught out his typical reply is ''alright I was only joking'' although I know he wasn't and he is 56yo and at that age I think he should know better. |
