Graz

Graz has the 2nd largest population in Austria after Vienna, the city is a world heritage site with plenty in the city of tourist intetest, and is at least 2 hours by road from Vienna airport or even longer from Salzburg or Ljubljana airports. Furthermore Graz airport had 960,000 pax in 2017

I know Easyjet fly winter seasonal to Klagenfurt, that there is a fare war at Vienna and that Ryanair used to fly Stansted-Graz (and bmi tried Birmingham-Graz) but it puzzles me that nobody is trying a London-Graz route for summer 2019.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what it would take for a London-Graz route to return or why it's unlikely to happen ?

If my memory is correct, I think NorthEast Airlines with their yellow tails (later to become part of BEA) used to fly LPL to Klagenfurt in the seventies so it was served from UK regional airports in the past.

The bmi BHX route was really a charter flight for Jaguar Landrover transporting workers between the JLR plant and their European partner Magna Steyr

The former Northeast Airlines if I remember correctly also flew scheduled flights between LHR and Klagenfurt during the late 60's and early 70's with their Trident IE's.

During the 90s there were inbound charters to London from Linz and Graz on an outfit called Austrian Air Transport into STN. I’m pretty sure Ryanair has done each of Klagenfurt, Linz and Graz from STN.

Aside from skiing Austria seems to have fallen out of favour with UK tourists more generally. I believe Vienna used to be well within the top 10 city destinations for Brits, but by the time I went around 05/06 it was completely off the radar. I’m sure there are less summer charters to Innsbruck than there used to be as well and scheduled services are few.

It’s only really in the last 2-3 years that the number of LCC routes to Vienna has taken off. Perhaps some of that will start to rub off on the rest of the country.

...and as much as 3 hours by direct train Vienna Airport - Graz Hbf. However... what a scenic train ride it is, meandering through the Alps. As a tourist, give it a chance!

FR did indeed do Klagenfurt, Linz and Graz, as well as Salzburg. Salzburg still flourishes and Linz still has a twice a week service I believe. Presumably other subsidies dried up. Easyjet flies there from Berlin. Perhaps they could be persuaded.
