Rushed Approach 22nd Sep 2019 18:33

Just re-watching Raab on the BBC's Marr this morning replayed by Sky News and he seemed to imply that were TCX to fail, there'd be a difference in the treatment between ATOL protected (package) and non-ATOL (flight only) customers, and he said the govt "had learned lessons" from the Monarch experience. This might mean that non-ATOL protected customers would have to find their own way home and claim on travel insurance. With the Monarch collapse the travel insurers got off lightly in terms of repatriation costs as the govt paid for non-ATOL repatriates - perhaps it's a case of once bitten twice shy (govt is still chasing the Monarch repatriation costs from their creditors (Greybull) I believe).

I was heavily involved with our new STN and BHX bases, an integral part of our product is to give package holiday makers free baggage allowance of 23kg, you would be amazed how many customers came over to us from airlines that started charging for baggage, what I’m saying is there is a big gap in the marked for a “Premium Charter Airline” where you get everything but you also pay for it in the ticket price, There is always two ends to a piece of string, not everyone has a tight budget.
remeber Britannia Royal class it had a reputation or class within the carter world and that’s what’s now missing from the current offering, people will pay more even if they only get a Gold luggage name tag for their bag and a gold sign above check in I would go as far as say it’s a class thing with a stereotypical passenger like mrs Bucket.

Sleepless night for all involved I think. When can we expect an announcement to come?

Buster the Bear 22nd Sep 2019 18:39

Gatwick slots have a huge value, recently Norwegian raised $380m as as part of an exchange package to delay repayment of unsecured bonds. The UK arm of Thomas Cook clearly has some value, as I believe that 9, possibly more airframes are Gatwick based?

TartinTon 22nd Sep 2019 18:49

daz211....I hear what you're saying but I think the size of market is very small. GB airways and Monarch both offered exactly what you say but as time went on and Easyjet/Ryan et al became bigger and bigger the price differential that they were able to command over them became smaller and smaller. At the end of the day price is king to the consumer despite what they may say. What they do is vote with their wallets.

According to somebody in crewing, between 0300/0430 is when all aircraft are back in the U.K./Enroute back so I imagine between those times.

Just arrived in the crewroom for DLM tonight and everything seems to be going as planned, flight crew seem confident we will depart.

Yes the market is small but if your the only airline doing it you don’t need a massive market.
Thomas cook need something new and something exiting to bring to the market, just following the market leaders just won’t cut it. Massive change is needed if they get a chance to carry on.

The Long Haul Aircraft won't be back in the UK until 6.00 at the earliest, but will of course be en-route

I believe the Dalaman that @USERNAME_ is flying on is actually the last back, at 7am local. So an announcement between 3/4:30 would sound about right as they will all be on their way home. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, if the Dalaman departs then it’s a good sign as if you think back 2 years, Monarch cancelled all of the night flights last minute.

I’m feeling so much for each and everyone of you employees.
The press are hell bent on telling us how it affects Kev and Tracy’s Magaluf holiday . But we professionals know it’s families that will suffer.

This isn’t a sales pitch , but my employer will be glad to hear from you. PM me and i’ll gladly pass on to the best person should the worst happen.

I assume this is the LGW flight? This is now showing a departure tomorrow at 17.30 according to the TCX and LGW websites.

Whitemonk Returns 22nd Sep 2019 19:19

I know that the Jet2 TR courses starting from Jan 2020 are mostly wide open and they are running two to three a month that time of the year, (both fleets) scant consolation I know but for those desperate for a UK base it is a good option, particularly for FOs. We have quite a few very happy ex Monarch here at the moment. Best of luck to all involved.

I don’t believe there is. Isn’t this essentially what BA have tried with their weekend CityFlyer operation, offering both full Business Class and Economy with free drink/snack from the regions? It seems to tick over OK from MAN and STN (although scaled back compared to previous years) but got pulled from BHX and BRS.

Also the key London market is covered in that respect by BA, with extensive leisure route network from LGW which offers Club Europe along with some routes at LHR, LCY and the weekend STN mentioned above.

No words from me or the others on here will help you mate, but genuinely gutted for you and your colleagues. Get you and your crew down the nearest watering hole and remember the good times.

Sorry to hear that chief. I know that feeling all too well.

As I said further up the thread, “this is going to hurt”. The next few days will be tough. Tomorrow have a look & see if any of the advice I posted can be of any use.

For now, crack open the bar trolley, grab a handful of DF’s and remember the good times & great people. Better some booze goes missing than it goes to the b@stards & vultures that take so much and give nothing back.

if this is true, its very sad. Many of my colleagues who found a new job after Airberlin bankruptcy at Thomas Cook are now facing the same problem 2 years later again.
as our highest seniority captain said on the last Airberlin flight: Over and out, Have a better one!

Alex macheras via twitter.
BREAKING: Thomas Cook, the world’s oldest travel company operating hotels, airlines, cruises & resorts, has ceased business operations.

• Suppliers are being informed that #ThomasCook has ceased business operations

• Airlines (including wet-lease specialists) have been given go-ahead to position to UK for rescue flights which will bring stranded passengers back to the UK, known as Operation Matterhorn

Lucky_Luke2 22nd Sep 2019 19:48

USERNAME_ I see your DLM being delayed for lack of crew. (DL64) Someone called in unfit?

Presumably they will wait until they are all in the air and heading towards the UK before pulling the plug?

Officially yes, but has the DLM situation which will hit the airwaves like wildfire put those ops in a precarious situation? As they’re not in the air yet.

Will have a clearer head tomorrow hopefully. To clear this up, the captain asked crewing if we could be guaranteed to get home if we entered administration down route, they couldn’t, and so he stood us down and not the company.

So that explains the delay and not the cancellation. technically should Cooks pull through, a 17:30 departure tomorrow could happen with the same crew??

luchtzak 22nd Sep 2019 19:59

Alex Macheras is saying that the group has ceased operations, confirm?
