It's probably because people making their own way to the gate for a connecting flight without rescreening will evade the parade through the shops, nothing to do with security risk.

Although in the same satellite domestic & international are on different levels & totally segregated obviously.
For arrivals, all international pax are segregated from departing pax regardless of which satellite you arrive into. So although you can walk from Sat 3 back to the main lounge, you absolutely cannot do so if you've just arrived so self connection without rescreening just isn't possible. |
A/P1...402.
Correct of course... |
Highlights from STN Commercial Director`s blog on the outlook for 2018.
Of the 154 connections available with EK out of DXB 86 will be a viable choice from STN. After EK being signed further long haul ambitions are more routes to the USA & new services to China & India. A mezzanine seating level above the main restaurant area in the departures lounge adding 1500 seats to the 2000 available at present. 12 new check in desks,a further 2000 car parking spaces & 8 new aircraft stands. |
Correct of course... Makes no sense from the perspective of the customer and so far as anyone has shown, it's not a security issue as everyone is already cleared to UK DfT standards and makes life incredibly difficult if you're making a connection. Not quite true for departures, international flights operate from the domestic gates and sometimes domestic flights go from international gates |
I am all too familiar with your description of the layout.
STN406`s post was enlightening. Answer summation tho to one of your original questions states there exists no official connecting facility at STN. My own description of SELF-connect meant just that. I feel it is a facility that should be introduced or re introduced (those connecting corridors exist =Air Berlin.I accessed/used them myself with the correct airside pass to move between the arrivals area ex the transit train but before immigration & then thru back into the main departure lounge!). |
STN406`s post was enlightening. In terms of connecting officially you can not go from one flight to another without exiting through arrivals and being re-screened at security. Though I know some passengers do proceed into the departure lounge by showing their boarding pass to the security officer at the end of the bridge/walkway and saying they went to the wrong gate. But this shouldn’t be allowed and with the talk of new security processes coming in soon, passengers hoping to seek through should be stopped in the future. Great potential but bonkers layout! |
As already rehearsed over on the LTN thread...
STN traffic down 1.2% for December due mainly to 300 flights canx due adverse w/x in the UK & Europe. (Still with the RYR crewing issue negative effect too). However December was still the second busiest December ever with 1.8m pax. 2017 busiest ever year with 25.9m pax (shame just to miss the 26m). 2017 = +6.5% or 1.57m pax. |
Nantes 4 PW with RYR commence W18..

Are Air Mediterranean about to quietly drop their Stansted-Athens route ? It looks like everything on STN-ATH has been zeroed out after Sunday 21 January (ie end of this week). Their website seems to show flights on all other routes ending by 25 January

I'm a little dubious about the existing 2000 seats. That figure may be true if you include the seats at the various gates, but not in the main departure lounge, which at times resembles a refugee camp, with passengers wandering around, trying to find a seat,.
The cheaper and easier option would, of course, have been to utilise some of the excessive retail space, but obviously passenger comfort comes second to profit maximisation. |
Hope this isn't 3 steps fwd 2 back.
Manchester has already nicked 3rd place. Still bags of potential at STN. |
Jet2 put on New york flights, but none for STN this year. wonder if Primera have them running scared.
No current Primera flights for Nov/Dec, so Jet2 could have had a head start |
Were they scared off by MAN'S daily flights to NYC? I'm sure BHX and STN will see Xmas flights. Would be great as well if they offered them from other airports as well.
|
They are much more established in MAN and probably have a stronger base market than STN, so i'd imagine they'd be less threatened by existing NYC routes.
Then again, they don't have an EDI route either, so i could be talking nonsense, it might just be down to a/c and slot availability |
there are more options to JFK from London that the North. when I checked on Expedia the fare on BA on the same day was cheaper than Jet2 with a bag a meal and reserved seats. all of which are free on BA long haul.

Speaking to a friend today who works within MAG. Stansted will in the coming years have full ‘shoreline’ check in instead of the current ‘island’ design.
Though this may take quite a few years due to structural changes needed on the mezzanine level and baggage sort. 8 new ‘shoreline’ check in desks are expected for the summer. Possibly in time with Emirates launch. These will be located where the M&S was situated. New arrivals building is apparently waiting for approval of Stansted being able grow over the 35 million passengers allowance. Though this is currently being debated. Obviously some of these things may change again, but this is just what a friend passed on. Being Stansted Airport they most likely will, as things seem to change daily. |
The new arrivals building is going ahead no matter what it is needed to reach current permitted levels of growth work is due to start this year.
