Same airports with a wide body but to places like Florida the Caribbean and the US West coast as well as Asia. From some of those cities they'd have competition but from a lot of them they wouldn't or the competition is very light.
They may well have identified gaps in the market that they can fill.
I wish them luck.

I cannot see folk wanting to go on a cramped narrow body to the Caribbean, Asia or USA east coast when VS DY TUI and TCX have new or refurbed 787 and 330 fleets with full IFE - also the regionals are well covered with KLM via AMS and EK via DXB

Monarch did it for years with 757's (and A300's) and whilst she could get into niche destinations (always with a fuel stop and crew change) such as Maldives Mombasa Agra Goa Aqaba and Kerala -
all were only seasonal -- I might add the pax really did not suffer the 757 or the A300 too well - most hated the flight home and vowed never to go on Monarch again!

I worked for MON at LGW and flew to MCO via BGR and to Male via BAH and MBA via Cairo - its an expensive operation with intensive crewing/HOTAC and seasonal empty legs

I am at a loss as to what long haul market now that MON could be looking at to achieve with any success and safety of a decent return.

People fly across the Atlantic everyday in narrow bodies with American Delta United Aer Lingus and Norwegian so why not Monarch? And not everyone from the regions likes using a hub airport.
If they did Florida the Caribbean and Asia then I can't see them using the MAXs they'd have to get A330s or 787s.
Monarch are a different airline now so I'd imagine they'd be looking at being a long haul LCC rather than charter.

rog747 20th Sep 2017 10:10

i hear all you say thanks, but that all = a very risky business, we have huge LCC now in the guise of DY & TCX/Condor (plus EI Icelandair and WOW)

+ where are these long haul planes coming from?

nothing adds up -- sorry to be negative
(I worked for MON/OM many years ago when all was pretty good, a careful approach to the then markets and nice great people)

With respect, I think a lot of people here over estimate their own ability to comprehend and understand the issues at hand! It matters not whether you work for a competitor or worked for Monarch back in the day, you simply don't have the full picture or even significant portions of it! Your opinions are a bit like chocolates and teapots!

Let's see what happens!

rog747 20th Sep 2017 11:33

well yes indeed of course - however this IS a talk and rumour forum - yes often 'pub' talk and plenty of conjecture lol

saying that having worked in the UK airline and mainly the holiday and IT charter airline world since 1972 and having seen it all come and often all go - i think i have a fairly good idea and take on whether its ''four legs good or two legs bad'' in this case....

This latest scenario of Monarch I just think that long haul is a ship long sailed for them - anyway as you say lets see what happens!

dc9-32 20th Sep 2017 11:39

Maybe Monarch are talking to Air Tanker about leasing A330's.....

brian_dromey 20th Sep 2017 11:44

Which are leased to TCX and Jet2 for the next 12 months....

dc9-32 20th Sep 2017 12:08

yes those ones are but there are others available....

Are you sure Airbus A330 comes into operation at Manchester Airport | Jet2.com

rog747 20th Sep 2017 13:56

very nice and Jet2 and Jet2 holidays is justly proud of its very smart new wide-body acquisition offering for its passengers from Manchester this summer

i remember the heady days in 1971 when opening the latest Cosmos Tours Summer holidays brochure with a double paged spread featuring an artists touch-up rendition photo of a Monarch Boeing 720B in-flight with a big slogan blazoned across the pages
''Look what we've bought for you!''
Cosmos goes all Jet!

So what is Monarch and perhaps Monarch Holidays buying for us now?

toledoashley 20th Sep 2017 15:28

I can see how a long-haul leisure focused airline would work, and there might be a market out there to compete against TUI. With two bases in London and Manchester - connecting lessor served Caribbean Islands/Central America (Aruba/Puerto Vallarta/Bahamas...), Maldives, Ras Al Khaimah(?), Goa, Brazil (Recife/Salvador)? - which can all tie in to a tour operation, and sell seat only.

Both Norwegian and Thomas Cook have been focused on cities (mainly in North America).

Such a shift though is a risky game...

I'm my opinion I think Monarch should launch Canadian routes very strong market but I would want to find out if Stansted's new long haul airline Primera Air is planning Canadian routes first.

a strong market but already with TCX/condor Air Transat Westjet DY
air Canada rouge plus AC and BA

Canada is very seasonal too unlike much of USA cities

Caribbean was Monarch's stomping ground once along with Goa Mombasa Egypt and the Maldives - apart from Egypt all of those are seasonal

daz211 20th Sep 2017 20:15

Well covered yes but all at the bottom side of the dreaded M25
Not covered from LTN or STN take both catchment areas of said airports it would be a massive market for Monarch at LTN

TartinTon 20th Sep 2017 20:17

LTN...THE worst departure experience of any UK airport bar none...great selling point....

Judging by pax comments elsewhere on this forum the economy 787 product is nothing to write home about.

1994Heavy 21st Sep 2017 07:28

Other question is can you make a wide body out of LTN work? Only a 7000ft runway

rog747 21st Sep 2017 07:50

not really no

BY did it for abit to Oz with 762 but moved to LGW and Silverjet did it with a low density LGW 762

BMA were basing 707's in the 70's at LTN for ABC charters to USA but moved them to STN

Jerry123 21st Sep 2017 08:42

Bristol has a shorter runway so a 787 8 should be ok
