Loganair severs ties with Flybe

It will be great to see the Loganair livery again, though the CEO does seem to be burning his bridges a bit by declaring that he is 'delighted'. You'd almost think they'd been forced into BA and FlyBE franchising, rather than deciding to do it to themselves.

No more use of avios to book Loganair flights then. Shame. hey were useful for some of the more expensive ones.

G-LGNA looked pretty much like this under the BA franchise, the tartan tail and dark belly evoke the Mountain of the Birds / Benhone scheme worn until the flybe re-spray.

btw I wonder if it's not really "Flybe severs ties with Loganair" as they've sailed very close to the wind in engineering and safety matters in recent years.

I was hoping they might have gone for a fleet wide livery based on the new Twotter's livery, but I don't think that new one will look too bad on the actual aircraft

What now for the MAN hub?
 
I wonder what this means for the Flybe hub operation at MAN, when three times per day Logan's Run arrives from places around Scotland, and of course from Norwich with the D328. These flights fly on Logan call-signs and flight numbers but are part of the Flybe code-sharing arrangement which is of growing significance to MAN's burgeoning long-haul services. Will this continue when 'severed' from FlyBe? On the positive side it will be nice to see the Logan's painted in a colour-scheme rather than the anonymous white-tails which make up most of the fleet these days.

I think people have a very romanticised view of Loganair. I don't share it. Their six month performance may have improved but it's going to take more than painting tartan on the tail and emblazoning 'SCOTLAND'S AIRLINE' on the side to improve their image with folk who rely on them.

I have family who use them all of the time. Overpriced and unreliable are what they say. It was only a year ago that Sturgeon got involved with Loganair (none of the issues raised were attribuatable to flyBe), there was press coverage and protest groups on social media.

Yes they do operate some lifeline and unique services, but flying SYY-EDI/GLA they are very average and overpriced.

I'd like to see flyBE operate the Q400 on some of the busier routes hugging via EDI. I think they'll work and lack of competition if what has allowed LC to provide what has been a fairly shocking service of the last few years.

Yeah it was a few years back as a W patten via GLA before they had a base there. But it just fizzled out and no more was said about it. I think the 738 is too much capacity. A Q400 is similar to the ATP which flew the route for years.

flyBE should have years worth of data which it could use to its advantage. I remember when bmi Regional started the EDI route. It only lasted a year but kept prices competitive. With a Q400 (vs a thirsty E135) it could work and feed the EDI hub. Either that or the keep codeshares to allow east guaranteed connections to EDI/GLA and beyond.

Very interesting to hear the insights into Loganair's recent past, and more so to hear the effect that a CEO / MD can have on an airline. Aren't those aspects meant to be run by the COO, for exactly the reason of contuinuity of attention and avoiding disruption as the top man changes?

I could only see the Q400 on SYY/LSI/KOI to the central belt. It's too big for all of the other locations to make money on.

flyBE should have access to lots of sales data so will be well placed to work out which routes would work if they operated them in their own right and make money on them.

Stranger things have happened in the world of flyBE! I wouldn't rule anything in our out.

Flybe aren't a cheap airline to fly with either and you also have to add on bags to the price which you don't with Loganair. Flybe aren't the most reliable airline either. Their cancellation rate is pretty high and that's not flying into the poor weather conditions in the Highlands and Islands. Tech DH4s are also fairly common.

Jersey/Guernsey/Exeter/Newquay get exposure to some fairly awful weather. flyBE have experience operating into LCY with its steep approach, shortish runway and windshear. I'd say the Q400 would operate no problem up there and neither would flyBE.

The six month performance of Loganair may have improved but over the last several years have been fairly poor.

In terms of the bags, if it gives people the option of nipping home for the weekend on the cheap then I can imagine them being all for it.

Northern Canada - Q400 doesn't seem to have any issues there.

It also seems to cope well in Norway, Iceland and Greenland too.

SATA operate them around the Azores and even sent it into Funchal.

Air New Zealand link also operate into Wellington which is renowned for it weather.

It can also carry an additional 29 passengers for the same fuel as a S2000.

Be careful what you wish for
 
Flybe muscled into the market in the Southwest promising the earth and ultimately putting the local airline out of business. Once they had the monopoly they kept one route only which was the only one worth their while running on a 78 seater.
Flybe is about profit so forget any ideas about marginal routes to support local communities.
As for KOI and LSI, I doubt you would get anywhere near a full load out of either on a Q400 especially on a wet runway.
