Worlds shortest airline routes

Perhaps not all accurate but some intersting video anyways.

You can drive between the two airports in under an hour. I suspect all the passengers will be continuing to Cologne.

At one time - Decades ago - an international carrier (TWA ?) flew JFK - EWR on a 747 positioning flight.

But rather than deadhead it, they sold tickets. Surely the shortest 747 route!

Yawn. This subject has already been done to death on these forums!

I seem to recall this topic surfacing in these hallowed halls a few years ago. There are two categories: National and International.

The shortest national I rode was Dundee (DND) to EDI. At the time it was served by British Midland with a Saab 340 and I clocked it wheels to wheels at 11 minutes.

Westray-Papa Westray is the world's shortest scheduled flight, as mentioned in the article. I don't think it's possible to get any shorter than the 2 minutes it takes to get from PPW-WRY as even then it's usually not even half that time.

For me the shortest scheduled flight I have been on has to be Akureyri-Grimsey in Iceland which was scheduled to take 30 minutes but took barely 19.

BHD to International on Gill Air

Juneau to Gustavus takes 8 minutes by Alaska AL B737. We beat it from gate to gate in a PA-28.

Ryanair when they operated BHD to PIK. I was on a flight which took under 20 mins.

I have been told that EZY pilots have a book on the shortest time from wheels up to wheels down between GLA and BFS. I'm believe the record is 17 minutes.

Was planning a day trip to Orkney while visiting northern Scotland a couple of years ago so tried to book the round trip Kirkwall-Westray-Papa Westray-Kirkwall, but as I wasn't local I could only do it by showing up on the day. Gave it a go but was fully booked on one of the legs so couldn't do it.

I suspect you mean from "wheels off" to "wheels on", otherwise they could cheat and lower the gear 20 miles out. :O

Oops. Betraying my nonprofessional background.

Well, I always believed it to be Westray to Papay but that one in Indonesia looks shorter. Not a regular service however, although it is a commercial service.

I have flown BRS to CWL back in 1995 on a flight that continued on to IBZ. I can't remember that even taking 10 minutes

Dairyground 14th Nov 2016 00:02

It no longer operates, but in the early 1970s I flew on a scheduled helicopter service from Berkeley across the bay into SFO. Security checks were after the flight, on the way into the terminal.

According to Wikipedia, in 1974 the flight moved from Berkeley to the roof of the Holiday Inn in Emeryville, at the northern end of the Bay Bridge, which would have made the flight even shorter.

LPL-IOM on an easyJet A319 in 12 minutes airbourne time...

valefan16 14th Nov 2016 12:07

Done LPL to IOM on a Dash-8...

Although I wasn't on it in the early 00's I went to Kos from EMA and it was early season so TCX sent a 757 on a BHX-EMA-KGS routing so the PAX on the first bit would have been airborne for mere minutes!

wouldhave 14th Nov 2016 12:55

Did Skiathos to Volos which took 12 minutes on a Viking 737

Barling Magna 14th Nov 2016 15:46

I think my 8 minutes Alaska AL flight schedule from Juneau to Gustavus/Glacier Bay is winning for the shortest jetliner schedule. The 8 minutes is total flight time, it takes longer to taxi and park than it does to fly the route.
