Air India breaks record for world's longest flight

Air India breaks record for world's longest flight - by swapping direction of Delhi-San Francisco service

I find this article somewhat confusing as the great circle track DEL-SFO gives statute miles of 7,706. Is there some reason such as diplomatic clearances or enroute alternates why they would not fly the shortest time route over the pole, subject to winds?

Maybe headwinds/tailwinds had something to do with it. Or, were the company making a deliberate attempt to break the record ?

It's wonderful that the kids in PR do not understand the importance of adding the word 'commercial' into their headline. Or was it simply a proving / PR flight and not going to be the standard route?

Greater distance, faster flight time. Taking advantage of easterly jet-streams after receiving regulatory permission to fly the faster route. Flightradar24 have a full blog post explaining the story.
