Almost two years after one of its Boeing 777s went missing, Malaysia Airlines is grounding its remaining fleet of the aircraft - and cancelling the route on which one of the planes was shot down.

Sounds as if its going bankrupt such a step is unheard of no one will book with them with such uncertainty

MAS lost two 777, it closed down last year.
MAB has taken over the"assets" and entered into a codeshare with Emirates, part of the deal is MAB give up the Paris and Amsterdam routes.
No drama, no bankruptcy, it's business.

Well, I've just had 3 very pleasant flights with them, and I'm flying back to LHR with them tomorrow, so I'm not quite sure what your point is?

I have flown at least 4 flights a month with them for the last 2 years. No issues apart from change the Bl**dy caterer !!

Likewise, I've flown them a few times recently. Very nice too.

My goodness. Air France has had three unscheduled hull retirements since 2000, all involving Airbus* aircraft. Who'd buy their tickets? At any price?

Including one of the (statistically) unsafest aircraft ever built, the Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde !

I flew Japan-Perth with MAS the morning the news of the tragedy of 17 was what I and the crew woke up too.

A very professional crew and company on that occasion, also Perth Amsterdam return with them twice in earlier times. will go again if the trips fit.

I ahve flown a fair number of MAS sectors and to me its classic case of decent operational staff in a business let down by corruption and ineptness at the upper levels . and in their case some seriously bad luck with probably the two most bizarre disasterous hull losses of modern times.

Nort qualified to comment on the flight deck crew but often seemed fairly friendly on the pa and the cabin crew really one of my favorites close to Singapore standards but more genuine and friendly. and I hope not too many of them lose their jobs in the changes the airline is going through

Just as a random example:

Convair CV-880: 65 built, 14 hull loss accidents: 22% of all aircraft lost, excluding non-accident losses, hijackings and criminal damage.

I believe hull losses on the Vickers Viscount were in the region of 40% IIRC

well if you look at the life history of the DC-3.....................

fly a decent aircarft long enough and it will cascade to the ends of the earth and be operated in late life by idiots

It's planes like the CV880 that go bad early that are the real worry

I've used MH several times to Australia, luckily at the front of the aircraft, and their product compares very favourably with other carriers - and usually at a lower price.

I did transit through KL just two days after MH370 and it felt a bit strange, but it didn't put me off flying with them.

They clearly need to restructure and that means cutting some less profitable routes, I for one hope they can turn the business round.

Flew MAB SYD-KUL yesterday and KUL-LHR today. Several MAB 777s operating at both fields.

I'm an expat currently working and living in Malaysia. i'm a keen aviation enthusiast, hence my frequent visits to this site.

MAS have only themselves to blame for their operational difficulties. Since the rise of Air Asia, MAS were slow if not reluctant to change their pricing structure to be competitive. Air Asia effectively cornered the short haul market around 7 years ago.

I fly KUL to LHR several times a year, I would like to use MAS but their fares are way above that of the middle eastern operators unless booked 6 months in advance. MAS are now fighting back on short haul but it's probably too little too late.

The unfortunate incidents in 2014 have not deterred locals from using MAS, many are standing by their national carrier. I still use MAS whenever they are competitive, the service is as good as any other operator. Their Boeing fleet is ageing so it's not surprising the 777's are being axed as it's Bus fleet expands.

Out of interest... my neighbour was captaining 9M-MRO on the previous flight before it went missing. He has nothing but praise for Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and believes if it was possible to save the aircraft this guy had the skills to do it! Ironically one of my colleagues sister was a pax on MH17.

Let's hope the industry focus on safer travel, reasonable prices and if we enjoy the flight.... that's a bonus!

Corruption, powerful unions, Singapore Airlines a short distance away, Air Asia competition on domestic/regional routes, the Gulf airlines on international routes and previously high oil prices would have been enough to bring them down even without two disasters in the space of a year.

MAS used to be a Skytrax 5* airline, hopefully in restructured form it will find its niche in the market and prosper though it will certainly be a lot smaller.

Returned to LHR today on a MAS 380, and, as with the outbound leg, the service was fine, food OK, and the seats more comfortable than those on BA's 777. (I can only speak for economy unfortunately )
The upper deck economy cabin was especially comfortable, and you did not feel that you were flying with hundreds of other pax. Having said that, both our outbound and inbound flights were only around 50% full, and less than that in business.
It was also disappointing to note that the toilet that was out of service on our outbound flight was still nonfunctional over 2 weeks later,
