Kemble to close?

Looks like Kemble airfield could be next to close if the planners get there way.
Presume the only main business there is the scrap man who would lose out!

If, as the article suggests, the airfield owners are already in bed with the developers, then it's all over bar the shouting.

There has been talk of Hawarden being used for reclaiming parts it may be connected to this. Not sure of the technical skills required to strip an aircraft in terms of a flexible workforce.

Sad news if true some great memories. .....

Kemble Airfield is a massive site - the airfield and housing are not necassarily exclusive

Following the 2,000 houses, the NIMBY element will finally kill it off!

I really hope not, but it is a 'Brown Field' site.

Rivet Joint 17th Feb 2015 21:19

You can't deny there are too many airports in this country? Your average airport is a huge site as well, if it protects our steadily disappearing green belt land I'm all for housing on unwanted airports.

Hopefully someone can save the Britannia or stick it on a roundabout!

LGS6753 18th Feb 2015 19:24

This needs to be seen in its local context.

The District Council has planned to build 2350 houses on the outskirts of historic Cirencester, about 5 miles from Kemble, to which there is significant local opposition (it would increase Cirencester's population by about 25%).

This proposal has the benefit of being apart from the ancient town, on brownfield land, and offering the landowners a huge wedge of cash. Most locals are not well-disposed towards an airfield on their doorstep, despite the total lack of noise nuisance and the employment it creates.

Martin the Martian 19th Feb 2015 11:41

Your logic and reasoning are impeccable, LGS. I fear that it is a done deal. Still, I'm sure that the NIMBYs will enjoy all those cars travelling through their villages on the way to and from the M4 and/or A417.

They would need to watch out for a local chicken farmer throwing his hat at passing cars.
