TATL 757

After reading other posts on PPRuNe concerning the 757 replacement it was suggested that some routes would be dropped due to no like for like replacement.
Either airlines upgrade to 763/787 or 330 or stop services.

What routes do you believe EDI might lose or have upgrades?

Would the possible A321LR be a contender?

The A321neoLR looks like it's going to offer a near direct replacement for the 757, so in turn it's being targeted at the TATL 757 operators. I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of JetBlue join the TATL party too in the not too distant future.

Didn't think about Jetblue. That should be a winner with a A321LR when/if it comes to fruition.
Is there any chance that United upgrades one of its rotations to EWR to a 763 next year?

It might excite the enthusiast but from a passenger point of view, and recent personal experience, the UA 767-300 is definitely a big step down from the ex-CO 757s. The IFE is dreadful compared with the 757's

nighthawk117 23rd Oct 2014 11:18

United may well be looking at the A321LR as a replacement for the 757, however I'd expect Boeing will also be looking into the feasibility of a 739LR. They wont just leave this market to Airbus.

I don't think future withdrawl of the 757 will have too much of an impact on EDI. I can't see ORD lasting, and most other 757 routes can be done by the 737MAX. The 767 fleet will be saved for routes into Europe beyond the range of the 737MAX, so I doubt that will be making an appearance at EDI any time soon.

With United posting a $ 1.1 billion 3rd quarter profit I think they will stick with ORD for at least 2 more years, in fact I think that they will start seasonal IAH within 2 years cementing UA as the main TATL from EDI.

US/AA route to PHL has done well this year which I can only see cutting more into GLA passengers (steady Joe!) so all we need is Delta to give EDI the JFK and ATL route again but with advertising and better timings this time.

Dont think US EDI PHL has had any real impact on GLA, infact I think their figures were up and continue to have a longer season than at EDI. Would be surprised if there was any significant growth transatlantic from EDI tbh. Dont see any of the routes running full even at height of summer and requiring year round daily.

There's a reason they posted a profit, and it's not because they keep running flights that are less than full. I hope ORD sticks around, but from what I hear the loads are poor, and it's unlikely. IAH is extremely unlikely, they would need to use a 767/787 to operate such a flight, and if ORD is struggling, then so would IAH. Those aircraft would be far better deployed on flights to Europe where there's more demand.

While we are talking about loads, how is Qatar doing?

Bigbluebroxi 24th Oct 2014 17:59

US have changed their EDI-PHL route to EDI-JFK for next summer.

GLA loads have been superb this year.

Flying.Penguin 24th Oct 2014 19:09

A North American carrier cutting a route from Edinburgh to its main US hub after just 1 season and replacing it with "last ditch attempt to make EDI work" route to JFK. Deja vu!

fjencl 24th Oct 2014 19:20

Anymore NEW routes planned for easyJet at EDI for 2015

4eyed anorak 24th Oct 2014 20:24

Why would US drop PHL when they were carrying roughly the same amount of passengers as the more established GLA route in their first year?

I can understand the JFK route, trying to cut into the UA cake to New York but dropping PHL :ugh:

OntimeexceptACARS 24th Oct 2014 20:43

JFK from EDI?

Nothing yet for AAL or AWE on their websites yet for EDI-JFK, nothing either on Airline Route.

VickersVicount 24th Oct 2014 21:18

Qatar running around 70% loads on average which is surprising given it is still not daily and on the smaller 787 plus over the height of summer. Would daily fill it up any more ?

CabinCrewe 24th Oct 2014 21:22

JFK ? not again. What is it with EDI and short trials of US routes...? Stick with tried and tested.

Skipness One Echo 24th Oct 2014 22:08

JFK has New York's larger point to point market in comparison to PHL. Both have great connections. By the time next summer comes around, US Airways should only be the small print on an AMERICAN livery.

edistevie 25th Oct 2014 08:52

Was looking on Skyscanner last night for a flight to Vegas next summer and US Airways flight was still there for EDI to PHL then onto Vegas.

4eyed anorak 25th Oct 2014 13:40

Bigbluebroxi, can you enlighten us on where you found out PHL was being dropped in favour of JFK?

CAA data shows that, in the June to September period the GLA route to Philadelphia declined by 10.38% compared to the same period of 2013.

In the same period the EDI hub, with 38.46% of the combined EDI / GLA population according to data submitted to the Scottish government by BAA, achieved 49.04% of passengers using the route between the two Scottish cities and Philadelphia. Which catchment isn’t pulling its weight?
