This is not entirely surprising, but FRA still scores with 4 rwys compare to 2 at LHR, so can make up for it during the 18 hours/day when flights are permitted. Apart from the banned departures and limited arrivals between 0500 and 0600 at LHR, the night flights ban at FRA is more or less the same as at LHR. |

My understanding is that there had also been protests in favour of the airport!
What if a flight is running late? If it had to divert elsewhere, this would not just inconvenience the passengers, but it would also mean a disturbance elsewhere, and then again first thing in the morning, creating two sets of movements instead of one, not to mention that such positioning flights are also extremely wasteful. What would happen to early morning ops if a whole batch of flights can't load as they are still awaiting the inbound? As is often pointed out over here, well meaning legislation can end up being extremely counter-productive if it is taken too far. On the other hand, I remember whole host of MPs pusing not too long ago for a European wide night flight ban. They all signed up for it here due to freight ops over CVT - completely forgetting that the place for such decisions should always be the local planning authority. The last thing we need on this is the heavy clunk of the EU fist wiping out all nighttime movements, some of which have an extremely important impact on things we take for granted, like all those orders from Amazon.com. |
Jetopah.
This isn't really that new as its been in force for months now.Whats happened is that it has been reaffirmed by the Courts. "Whats next" Well the mayor wants to extend the ban to 10pm -6am which would cause big problems for early morning long hauls. Many other airports in Europe are also facing possible night restrictions as the NIMBYS scent govts being more sympathetic to environment issues mainly due to legal CO2 targets. Nigel |

Jaibird,
Yes agree with you, crazy as CO2 doesn't stay in one countries airspace as you say. Nigel |
Lufthansa Cargo, move your night operations to Prestwick (EGPK) - no such bans here concerning night traffic!! Plenty of space for 747`s, MD-11`s, etc. Us Scottish people are very friendly & Prestwick would kill for the business.....LOL.....
In fact, the airport is for sale, buy it and make it a cargo HUB! :D |
