Boeing lands largest single order in dollar terms

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates —
Dubai's fast-growing airline Emirates kicked off the Middle East's biggest airshow Sunday with a huge order for 50 Boeing 777s, marking the U.S. aircraft maker's biggest-ever single order in dollar terms.
Emirates and Boeing Co. valued the unexpectedly large deal for an extended range version of the 777-300 at $18 billion - the total by list price - though the carrier is unlikely to pay that much. Airlines typically negotiate big discounts, especially when buying in bulk.
Emirates has an option to buy another 20 777s as part of the order. That would push the deal's face value to $26 billion.
The deal further establishes Emirates as Boeing's best customer for the twin-engine 777, a workhorse of the carrier's long-haul fleet.
Emirates has 95 777s in service and already had another 40 on the order books. That means it now has nearly as many of the twin-aisle planes on order as it operates.
"The 777 has really served Emirates very well in terms of the seat cost, especially when we see that the fuel price today is very high," Emirates Chairman and CEO Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said in announcing the deal.
Earlier this month, Emirates posted a profit of $225 million for the first half of its fiscal year. That was a 76 percent decline from what it made during the same period a year earlier, a drop it linked in part to soaring fuel prices.
Although the Gulf airlines are the among the world's most ambitious in expanding their fleets and routes, a deal the size of the Emirates contract had not been expected at the airshow, which began Sunday. It and rivals such as Abu Dhabi-based Etihad and Qatar Airways have a massive backlog of planes already on order.
Chicago-based Boeing Co. said the deal is the largest single aircraft order in dollar terms in its history.

One of the nicest things about the 77W ... engine choice isn't a worry! (Has to be GE90).

It will be interesting to see what this order means for the A350-1000; TC indicated annoyance at Airbus's plans to shift to a different engine, but he didn't seem too upset about the change from RR to GE on the 777s.

Still, great news for the 777; it will be interesting to see if those options, or indeed part of this order, is converted to the 777NG, once it's launched.

Given the state of the economy. Let's see the money that's gonna pay for the new toys.

An increase in non-taxes for the expats? Lower pay for the new batch of joiners?

Sheikh Ahmed said that the new planes would be financed via a mixture of EU and US export credit, commercial asset-backed debt and Islamic finance products.

What was their choice of Power on the 380? Ah......right.

My buzz is that there were SIX 787s included in the order?

Qatar considering B767F

So what's the chance that the whole order goes as commited? I see airlines more and more place large orders and then cancel or scale back at later dates.

This is not the first mega order EK has placed and in almost every case, there have been people saying it's too many, they'll never fill them, etc etc. But all the way along, they have filled them and their load factors are high. They are continuing expansion. I see only one reason why all 50 acft won't be delivered and that would be because Boeing launches the 777NG; I'm sure EK and Boeing have reached an agreement to allow EK to convert orders to different/newer models. It's pretty much a dead cert that a new generation model of the 777 will be launched over the next 2-3 years.

yup - by then they'll be flying to every main UK airport with several rotations a day at the biggest

MY bet is that ABZ will get a direct Dubai flight before they get a Houston or New York one

You are probably correct. That is of course until the EU insists on flight parity. 50 Emirates/Etihad/Gulf/Qatar flights equals 50 flights from a pool of EU carriers. Their target market has to be Europe and as it stands at the moment there's no quid (for Europe) and not a lot of Pro.

Otterman
What smoke and mirror show would that be?
EK have been making big orders for years and keep filling them. They can't get aircraft or recruit pilots fast enough.
Just curious

But wait, there's more.

NEW YORK (AP) - Boeing Co. has received its largest commercial airplane order ever, topping its own record set less than a week ago.

Lion Air, a large private carrier in Indonesia, ordered a total of 230 airplanes with a list price of $21.7 billion. That includes 201 of the redesigned Boeing 737 "MAX" and 29 extended range 737s. The order was announced Thursday by the White House, as part of President Barack Obama's trip to Bali, Indonesia.
