Does this mean then that Iceland Express who only recently bought Sterling /Maersk have made a large wad of cash from their neighbours Icelandair ? useful for expansion ?

I guess Hannes will offer Sterling toMr. Stelios ( he already holds 14% of Easy) in exchange for for considerable part of Easy. He can practically offer all the Scandinavian Market to Mr Stelios, which will give Easy considerable edge over Ryanair.

Icelandair Group to be floated
ATW report that FL Group are to float Icelandair Group independtly on the Icelandic Stock Exchange. This is because FL Group has become an investment company. Icelandair Group will include Icelandair, Icelandair Cargo and Loftleidir Icelandic but not Bluebird Cargo or Sterling which will remain part of FL Group

Iceland Review has an article stating that Fréttabladid (one of the main newspapers in Iceland) has reported that Icelandair will be shedding 300 employees, reducing flights to various destinations and may also cancel scheduled flights to some cities because of rising fuel costs.
Can anyone confirm any of this? |
It is unfortunately true. This is due to rising fuel prices but most of all the economical crisis here and the bad stage of our currency. :bored:

Icelandair bought 20 Sukhoi Superjet 100-95s.
Where shall they fly? The nominal range of Superjet 100-95AR, with nominal passenger payload and reserves is 4580 km. Looking around Keflavik, KEF-JFK is 4172 km by great circle. Europe is closer: 4172 km from KEF includes Istanbul and Canaries. But the Icelandair now fleet is rather small - fewer than ten 757-s. The logical move for Icelandair would be to add a lot of new destinations and frequencies in Europe, served with Superjets, and concentrate their 757-s on the American leg. What are the likely new destinations? Do you think that a Superjet is a nice and comfortable way to cross half the Atlantic? (The charter airlines have a lot of experience offering stretched flights on MD-80s. And Superjet cabin is 10 cm wider than that of MD-80, so better comfort in coach than on MD-80 or B757.) |
AFAIK, Icelandair "sub charter" some of their a/c, perhaps this may be the case here....

I think its a very good aircraft for them to have, because, they have only got around 90-110 seats, yet can fly for a good 4-5hrs... so can reach destinations they wouldnt fill a B752 but in the future will be able to fly to them...

Icelandair brief question
An associate of mine says he's going to try and get a job at Icelandair. He's convince that they have a 767 fleet.
That's not right is it? Is he mistaken? Maybe they have a cargo department with a 76? Could anyone give a brief answer? Getting conflicting info on net/my friend. 1234 |
They do have B767's, however I think they are mostly used on charters (with Loftleidir Icelandic) or ACMI leases rather than scheduled flights

I see in the press this morning that Icelandair are pulling out of Glasgow until the end of March next year. The pullout is with effect from the end of November.

So GLA loses yet another international flight to become "seasonal"!. Suppose the economic climate has dictating this and from memory its not the first time (I think) that FI has done this. Shame though.

I think the specific plight of Iceland in general is of primary significance to that particular withdrawal. I don't think it's a Glasgow thing.

It is rather sad,there has been a service from Iceland to Scotland for a very long time.
The first Icelandair service was a Catalina into Largs Bay way back in 1945. |
So have they cut any other destinations?
Well no doubt Glasgow will see the Ice Air fleet on the ground before the years end - usually due to Divs with Iceland closed because of weather! |
