Star Alliance

Following the successful conclusion of membership talks with EgyptAir, the Chief Executive Board of Star Alliance has voted to accept as a future member, the national airline of Egypt, which in the last five years has undergone a significant transformation process and is now one of the foremost carriers in Africa and the Middle East.

I thought star alliance were a good bunch, now I am not so sure.
Could you explain why?

Fart Master 16th Oct 2007 16:26

Mmmmmmmmmm a class aquisition

Stingaling 16th Oct 2007 17:10

Fart Master

You beat me to it!

eagle21

Yes I can, so let me try and help you out. Answer these Q's for me. How many prangs have E. A had, in let's say the last 10 years? How many pax have they k****d in the last 10 years? Oh one more thing, did you here about the "flag carrier" who's aircraft flew from HECA to HESH single pilot? Yes the F/O was booted off the aircraft by the "Captain"

I trust the above is enough to get your head around, or would you like more?

Freeway 16th Oct 2007 17:30

I am in agreement with the above postings.
Star Alliance, I thought was a reputable alliance, with the like of BMI, Singapore, United etc. I think that the powers that be are crazy to allow an outfit with such a chequered operating history and safety record to join.
Not one of Star Alliances greatest decisions, I hope that it doesn't come back to bite them.

fendant 16th Oct 2007 17:32

Oh, God, Star is now really going downhill:sad: and it started off as a quality alliance. Reminds me of Swissair who bought every crappy airline in Europe and finally went bust.

At least Egypt Air's

a) cabin look better than United
b) Cabin Staff is friendly and not unionized as on United

Concerning safety record and maintenance quality see above comments

Fendant,

Regarding Swissair,

it were the Swiss that were crappy in their business ethics.

If not for Swissair, Sabena would still be around now and triving.

fendant 16th Oct 2007 17:52

M. Despegue,

Sabena was a good move and made perfectly sense with two good hubs in the North and South of Europe. Swissbena could really have worked.

Sabena was killed by the unions, and Swiss did nothing to break their back Swissair was not able to manage the integration other than financially and Mr. Reutlinger was nothing beyond a nice guy. The Swissair mistake was to try and fix the Belgian union problem by buying shareholding into some of the less preferred airlines in Europe. I think that it was finally the cash drain caused by LTU which brought the whole thing down.

@ Fartmaster
@Fendant

It's not an acquisition. Star is an alliance, not an airline.

Star will look at carriers that fulfill the Minimum Joining Requirements, are a good network fit and achieve defined technical and safety standards.

I'd have my qualms about flying Egyptair, but objectively, they're not significantly behind Singapore according to these statistics

Fact is that the major quality carriers - with the exception of Emirates/Etihad/Gulf (with a question mark) - are in bed with one alliance or another and - at this stage - it's a bit like choosing from the pool of the fatties/terminally uncoordinated/ chronically shortsighted to make up the numbers for the cricket team

@ Freeway
Reputable? BMI? You have no idea how Star would like to be rid of them

Freeway 16th Oct 2007 22:20

Yes, ok I get your point re BMI. Even so, Egyptair??? what are they thinking of !!

RAPC 17th Oct 2007 07:42

RevMan2 - out of interest, why would Star like to be shot of bmi? As they are partly owned by 2 other *A partners, with the option to be fully owned by LH in the near future I would have thought they wouldn't be rocking the boat too much within *A.
