Sky news are reporting there has been a plane crash at Thailands
Phuket Airport, after attempting to land in heavy rain.
Any gen?

Big mustache 16th Sep 2007 10:45

Thai news are reportinr a 12go plane form Bangkok skidding off the runway in heavy rain, breaking into 2 parts and catching fire, after circling 3 times. Nothing else definate at this time.

deltabravo 16th Sep 2007 10:48

Sky website is now reporting flight OG 269, an MD-80, operated by One Two Go, 'lost balance' following an attempted go around and has broken into two on landing. No reports of deaths/injuries yet although they are probably to be expected :(

The Nation TV station are reporting UNOFFICIAL quotes from the scene of at least 100 dead.

The plane was attemping to land on runway 09 if that makes any difference.

Xeque 16th Sep 2007 11:15

Yes. Thai TV is also reporting foreigners (Isreali's and Australians) amongst the pax. If the weather there was anything like it was in Bangkok at lunchtime today then it was very bad. Earliest reports mentioned a burst wheel on touchdown leading to the aircraft going off runway. There are alternate airports nearby (Trang and Surat Thani) but Iwould guess the weather was just as bad there too. Bad news.

stickyb 16th Sep 2007 11:17

Local TV is broadcasting live shots from airport and from hospital. Cameras seem to be allowed to follow the injured right inside the hospital in Thailand.
TV reoprts are saying 25 bodies already removed, more still in plane

Xeque 16th Sep 2007 11:25

Stickyb - sadly there is little or no privacy for injured and dead in Thai hospitals or at the scene of accidents. We see the goriest results of road accidents, suicides etc filmed from the Emergency Rooms on TV more or less nightly. Thai's seem to have a morbid interest in death and injury. Pity really - they are such nice people otherwise.

Just looking at TV pics from Phuket now. The aircraft doors are open but I can't see any slides.

Sometimes it cannot be long enough:

A survivor has said it seemed the pilot was trying to abort the landing and that no announcements or warnings were given.

Tigs2 16th Sep 2007 12:14

If it can be considered possible that there can be good news in this tradgedy, the confusion in news reports appears to be clearing. BBC news have just had a man on the news from Phuket saying that 50 survivors have been taken to hospital, indicating that the death toll may not be as high as initially reported by Reuters. I hope so:(

Yes. I stand corrected. I couldn't remember whether the livery was red on top or underneath and I see the aircraft almost daily as I go past Don Muang on my way to work. Thai TV have been interviewing survivors. There seem to have been some very lucky people, many of whom managed to get out through the break in the fuselage.

News Asia TV are reporting 60 dead, half non Thai nationals.

Sad news.

ZFT 16th Sep 2007 13:01

At the (very real) risk of being severely savaged for stating this – anyone involved in Thai aviation will not be too surprised about this tragedy.

Whilst wx may well be a factor, today’s was no worst than many other rainy season days.

Maybe worth noting that the REILs were inop on 09 recently.

BoughtMyPoints 16th Sep 2007 13:05

RWY 27 would be more likely, given the time of year, and the reported weather with winds out of 270 degrees.

Any confirmation they were landing 09 yet?

Strange decision given the westerly wind and ILS on 27.
