Just seen that planning permission has been granted to the airport to build an extension to the transport interchange including erection of entrance canopy and covered walkway.

Any news on this from anyone at airport

there will be some changes to this area over the winter to take account of problems encountered after build-my understanding is that this will include a walkway so that ATCO's no longer get wet when visiting the Spar for essential supplies!

Is the covered walkway from the main arrivals building to the transport interchange, or are we thinking of a covered walkway like between T1 and T2 at BHX all the way down to departures?

the way it was described to me was a walkway between the departures hall and the interchange

To be honest, who really cares about nice architecture? EMA is a low-cost airport, attracting low-cost airlines and simple, easy to manage extensions are more cost-effective than building some expensive terminal that no airlines want to use. Ryanair as the airport's biggest operator, are known for their fickle nature in this respect, look at their kicking off to the proposed "Taj Mahal" second terminal that STN wanted to build.

Well, you don't have to look at it anymore, do you.
In 5-10 years time, when the low-cost bubble has well and truly burst, then the airport will be left looking like a meccano/lego-type disaster and then, maybe, the owners will wish that they hadn't gone for all of those 'quick-fix' solutions, after all.

Covered walkways !! Asubject thats been discussed many times in the ramp cabin after yet another passenger has given you earache after getting soaked/frozen/blown away now that it has been decided that Stand 12 is now a walking stand.If the passengers are going to be walked all the way from Stand 12 to the arrivals hall surely a bit of perspex and a few supports to make a covered walkway would not break the bank especially as there is a major risk that halfway along this trek you will be help up around gates 5 down to gate 1 as a Baby or Ryanair are being boarded and the inbound passengers will be held (in all weathers) until the boarding is complete.Similerly when the passengers get off the coaches at arrivals although not very far it is far enough to get soaked or frozen if the arrivals hall ia full and the queue strecthes outside.Passengers should be telling thier frinds what a nice and positive experience it was using E.M.A not how they got half drowned or nearly froze to death on their long trek to arrivals.

Ryanair are trying to kill off the expansion at stansted by withdrawing a large amount of flights. BAA stats show stansted is down around 7% last month overall. Without overall growth the planning applications will fail and BAA will have to come up with a cheaper plan.

Ryanair could move away from EMA very quickly if is spat with BAA ends.

... I flew with Easy from STN earlier this year. Won't go back unless the price is substantially cheaper than EMA / BHX / CVT (would even rather Gatwick); because I got drenched / blown away when we landed and I had to walk to the terminal; and my bags were broken!

It really doesn't take much to move fickle pax between airports!

I don't have to look at it at the moment, instead I'm at BHX, which is an airport which embarked on expensive terminals and as a result has a cost structure which isn't flexible to real LCCs like easyJet and Ryanair. Although the bubble is at breaking point for the LCC market, more people are flying airlines like easyJet and Ryanair for shorthaul journeys, it will be smaller, poorly-managed LCCs which will be swept away ...

Stand 12 was being used predominantly by LCCs this summer anyway, though it was walking only when there weren't flights from the eastern lounge boarding and it was in good weather. I agree that some form of shelter would be appreciated by pax and staff alike airside.

I agree alot of the smaller low cost airlines will go in the next few years if not by the summer, ie Sky Europe. Which is why EMA needs to bring in and work with airlines with huge cash funds who can ride out any down turn. And I think EMA is working well with Ryanair, could do better but still, and the likes of easyJet. I'm still not sure what will happen or when with bmi baby, but either way when these smaller airlines go, another bigger airline will take the better routes. I wouldn't mind popping up and down to EDI.

All in all, EMA was done a great job this summer, although the domestic pax numbers is alittle concerning, even with the added numbers from INV, LDY, and BHD.

Also with Ryanair adding AGP from LPL, how long will it be till AGP is added to the growing route network from EMA. With 6th a/c coming soon, i wonder what routes if any will be added.

But im sure 2008 will be another good year of growth for EMA.

bmibaby will be around for a while yet, at the end of the day, the British Midland Group has been around for decades thanks to a fairly shrewd exec at the very top, and the current Lufthansa situation will either see money pumped into them to make them more competitive, or sold off to another airline who will further recognise the good competitive position they have at EMA and BHX. Presumably Ryanair's 6th a/c will either open up more brand new markets not currently served from EMA like Fez, or more routes into France, Spain and Poland which seem to be working out very nicely at the moment. EZY seem to be content pottering along with 3 a/c.
