Dutch airline company Martinair wants to be bought out by 50 percent owner KLM in order to deal with tougher competition in the air passenger market and undergo a drastic restructuring.

Martinair is owned 50-50 by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the Dutch arm of Air France KLM , and Danish shipping and oil group A.P. Moeller-Maersk.

"Adjustment of destinations, product and organisation have so far not given the company a firm base to be sustainable in the years to come," Martinair said.

"In view of the above the shareholders, Supervisory Board and Board of Directors have come to the conclusion that it would be in the interest of all stakeholders to realise a single shareholder structure for Martinair, preferably with KLM," the airline said.

Martinair, which operates a fleet of just over two dozen aircraft, said that while its cargo operations were solid, its passenger business, where it mainly has destinations in the Caribbean, was in trouble.

"Martinair's long-haul passenger business is considered to have enough potential to warrant continuation, but needs to improve its results drastically to be sustainable in the long run," Martinair said, adding that it plans to exit the short-haul passenger business.

Martinair, based in Amsterdam, flies to Aruba, Costa Rica, Canada, Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Suriname, Tobago and the United States.

So KLM controls 80%+ slots at AMS.
They control Transavia.
They control KLM cityhopper.
They control VLM.
They now control Martinair.

Nice to see the EU commission protecting the consumer

ExpectmorePayless, in the Summer of 2009 they will have 57,14% of all slots at Schiphol. That's nowhere near the 80% you claim. Thus there is ample space for competition, besides, Dutch customers can and will go to Belgium and Germany if that suits them better.

KLM and the Dutch authorities are corrupt. Always have been, always will be! Simple fact of life in good old NL.

Avman, where do you get your brilliant idea that KLM and the Dutch Authorities are corrupt?? That's a pretty hard statement to make and one I wouldn't make without giving some hard evidence...

I think if we are comparing countries I can name a few where I have a bigger idea that the migt be corrupt (Italy and the USA stangely spring to mind)....

As for companies, I'm not even going to respond to that one...

I personally think AF/KLM taking over MP is a good thing. If it hadn't gone through MP would have gone bust and 2000 people would be out of a job. From a consumer point of view, I think the Dutch consumer still has more than enough choice (flying Arkefly, going to Germany or Belgium, or even flying via the UK)....

Anto Trust and competition laws are important, the take over may save jobs, but if not done fairly this could result in other jobs being lost in more efficient companies.

I must admit that the law in this area does seem to receive a good deal of bending in certain cases. Several large GB companies have gone to the wall, I feel certain that it would not have been the case in some other countries.

I am not saying the Martinair takeover is wrong but it does sometimes seem one rule for one and not another.
